As an update MB no longer offer the new engine or new basic engine they only offer the long block part number 2740103116 80

The additional 2 digits at the end (80) mean it's a remanufactured part therefore the following must be outdated
b2bconnect.mercedes-benz.com/gb/products/remanufactured-parts/cars/engines/basic-engine

My point on the engine numbers is that this new one 454,306 is smaller that my original engine number 540,758 (assuming each new build is a sequential increment of one.

I spoke with parts this morning. They advise because it is a remanufactured engine the engine number while may have been from cicra 2016 essentially it is a rebuilt engine, making the number ill-relevant.

I can only hope it was rebuilt no known defective parts which would make sense.... but it is rather hard to trust MB of recent.

I see, I saw your other post on the other thread and I wish your success in swapping to forged pistons and getting things running properly again and stay running.

Cy Linder head replacement on 2021 GLC300

Add my 2021 GLC 300 to the list. Dealer just replaced the cylinder head at 32k miles. Had to get it towed after loss of power and horrible vibrations at idle. Che k engine light came on as well. Dealer said failed compression test and they are seeing this a lot. Repaired their first one about 2 years ago. No true fix yet and they have heard nothing from Mercedes. Unreal that this is some frequent yet MB is silent.

Sorry to hear. MB 4 bangers are, sadly, junk. Hoping for a swift and agreeable resolution.

There are two main 4 banger failures:

- #1 piston cracking: mainly M274 engine, seems to be around the 2018-2019 model year that the M274 was replaced by either the M254 or M264.
- cylinder head failure: latest model M264 engine.

Both major failures on these 4 bangers have been written about extensively by posters on this site.

so what are the odds you think that I will have the issue again in 30k or so miles?

Unknowable. My opinion is not good odds. They will replace with a remanufactured cylinder head or the same (new) component (cylinder head) that failed.

MB has a long history of similar failures. Too many to list. If they do anything at all, which is in the minority of cases, they replace parts which don’t solve the fundamental issue. MB is junk quality. Quality, in the Manufacturing 101 manual, is defined as consistently meeting or exceeding customer expectations.

Sigh, guess the M264 is not safe as well. Will be interesting what will happened to the M254 if anything. Weird that MB likes to go down in numbers, first M274 then M264 then M254, next M244?

And as mentioned NUMEROUS times in the past, the issue does not only affect MB Engines, ............................. Not sure why some of you continue to harp on this, as it has been discussed many, many times!

I am new to the forum and Mercedes as a whole. I agree that every manufacturer has issues with quality control, but I have owned 10 cars in my life ranging from Mitsubishi, Infiniti, Ford, Toyota, Audi and now Mercedes and the only manufacturer that has had any sort of major engine problems is this Mercedes. So my viewpoint is one of trying to understand how MB being such a prestigious brand have such a MAJOR flaw. This is a known issue for years and MB has not addressed it. What other manufacturers are having MAJOR engine problems that you are alluding to? I think anyone that is impacted from this should be raising a ton of questions and expect more from MB. BTW to give you more background this is the most I have ever spent on a car and this is the first time in my life that a car has left me and my wife on the side of the road on a trip! So I have a bit of a chapped a** with MB.

Search the forum for "LSPI," Low-Speed Pre-Ignition. There are a few discussions about the issue, noting that it's not brand specific.

Better yet, Google the interweb and you'll see the difficulty in eliminating it. The leading "cure" is reformulated oils, and it's the reason that MB has upgraded their oil specs.
specs.
As have most manufacturers.

The reason for the situation as it is, is that MB produces and sells junk. That’s all.

Pardon my ignorance, but is this engine failure issue only with the 2016-2019 model years? Or for this entire gen (2016-2022)? I'm asking because I'm considering buying a used 2020-2021 GLC. I'm currently driving my 2013 ML350 Bluetec and I'm at 275 000 km. Runs like a dream. I was thinking of buying something a little recent with newer technology.

Did you read all the information available?

The issue is not just with MB, as the below Toyota recall clearly states. Nor is the issue with "GLC model years" in general, as it depends which engine your GLC shall have. The 4 cylinder turbo engines are the issue, .....................

If your GLE350 runs like a dream, why buy something newer? I have a 2008 ML550 which as well runs like a dream and I am not considering getting rid of this vehicle due to the fact that I feel it to be "bullet proof"!

IMO, the older vehicles are much better put together than the new ones any day.

2020-2021 has the cylinder head leak problem, maybe it is not as common as CLA/GLA/GLB engines, but it happens:

Thank you for the reply good sir! I will admit that I didn't have time to read the entire thread, but I will do so this weekend when I have some free time. I really like my ML as well and I'm constantly debating whether to sell it or run it to the ground. I take very good care of it, but that new GLC interior facelift sure does look nice and tempting! I've never tried driving one, but I'd like to test drive one soon. My only concerns are size and comfort. I'm around 6'4-6'5 and 200 lbs... is the GLC comfort level as good as the ML/GLE (my ML has coil springs and is not airmatic)? Obviously, I don't expect to have the same interior size as the ML/GLE, but I hope it's spacious enough for someone my height/size.

I heard there is a recall at least so if anyone wants to buy one with the M264 engine, they should be covered? Please confirm first though.

Not a recall. MB calls it a part production problem and fixes it when the leak occurs. In Canada GLB owners received engine warranty extension under their consumer laws, not in US or elsewhere.

Can’t speak for the comfort at 6’5”. I am 6’0” and feel just as comfortable in the GLC as I do in the ML. My ML as well does not have the air suspension.

I'm also 6 foot.
The legroom is squeezed by the transmission tunnel in our '19 GLC, compared to an ML or GLE.
Less ability to stretch out as a passenger up front.

It's not a deal breaker for me, and the size is handier in parking lots.

Sorry to hear about that, I am curious though, cylinder 4? The cracks developing in pistons on the M274 I read only happens in cylinder #1.

I don't have a GLC300 but I do have 3 2017 E300's with the 274920 30 833882 engine. Looks like my engine's were produced after the April 20 2015 and March 27 2015 model years, where MB says they've "Modified wrist pins installed as of engines: 274 920E0 043259".

My daily driver E300 has 128,000 miles. Second and third have 102,000 and 79,000 miles (I drive a lot, and lend my car out to other people to use for long trips).

Knock on wood, I've had 0 major issues with the M274 engine. It's been rock solid and the only problem I've ran into which was fixed in later year M274 model year engines was the thermostat and the PCV valve/breather hose (or MB came out with a better version part). I've replaced both on all three of the cars. I know plenty of people who have the M274 engine on their 300 vehicles and none of them have had issues either. I believe if you use MB Fully Synthetic oil, change the spark plugs every 30,000-50,000 miles, clean the carbon build up off of the valves, let the engine warm up when cold, and use premium quality fuel like that of Mobil 1, you should be fine. Coming from someone who beats the ever living **** out of my E-Class and driving at not so legal speeds constantly, the M274 has been pretty reliable to me.

Reading this thread I truly am sorry for those who had their engines blow up. I hope MB can at least work something out with you guys and for people reading this thread in the future who are having issues with their M274 Engines, i would say it's probably better to buy this forged piston and wrist pin kit from Wossner and have your engine re-built than it is to junk it or replace the engine:

https://premiumtuning.hu/products/fo...274-11910.html

Cheers to all.
