Mercedes Glc (W253) Airmatic lost communication.
I’ve tried to connect through Xentry but I can not connect to the Airmatic module it comes up with the fault internal error so I was wondering could this be a software issue Due to having other codes relating to the airmatic module not communicating with other parts of the car I have checked all the fuses and bought a new relay from Mercedes.
I’ve tried to use DTS Monaco but I have no clue what I’m doing with that software so I left it alone.
Thank you in advance for your help.
I’m posting this to help anyone diagnosing an AIRMATIC fault where the car shows suspension malfunction and Xentry reports the control unit as an internal fault / boot variant.
Car had:
- AIRMATIC suspension fault on dash
- In Xentry, the N51/3 Air Body Control module showed as an internal fault
- Module status kept showing SPC213 boot variant
- If I unplugged the module, the car wouldn’t see it at all
- When plugged back in, it reappeared but still showed internal fault + boot variant
What I checked (and what I replaced)
1) Compressor test
I powered the compressor directly with 12V and it ran, but because the car is around 10 years old, I still replaced the compressor for peace of mind.
- Compressor part number: 0993200004
2) Relay in engine bay
In the left side of the engine bay, there’s a relay associated with the AIRMATIC system. I replaced it with genuine Mercedes to rule it out.
- Relay part number: A000 982 81 27
Result: No change (still fault / no operation)
3) Accessed the N51/3 module (UK RHD car)
Removed the passenger seat, lifted the carpet, found the module underneath.
- Checked for water ingress/corrosion: clean
- Opened the module casing and inspected the board: nothing visibly burnt
- Plugged it back in: still internal fault + SPC213 boot variant
- Control module part number: A 253 900 88 00
I also ruled out voltage and wiring issues (including replacing the battery due to a warning light), but it didn’t change anything.
The actual fix
Because Xentry kept showing SPC213 boot variant and the module reported an internal fault, I suspected corrupted firmware/software rather than a dead ECU.
I contacted someone who could remote in and work through DTS Monaco. After about 25 minutes of reflashing/recoding:
- The AIRMATIC button lit up red
- Cluster displayed “Raising”
- Suspension started operating normally again
Quick advice if you’re seeing the same thing
- Do the basics first (air leaks, compressor power, fuses/relay, power/ground, water ingress).
- If your N51/3 (A 253 900 88 00) reports internal fault and SPC213 boot variant, don’t instantly bin it, it can be recoverable with a reflashed.
