Some shady things about my new GLC

I love my GLC, but a few things have me worried/puzzled?! I let the gas/mileage indicator get down to 50 miles, suddenly the AC didn't work and all these warning lights came on (passenger warning indicator etc.) Is this normal?? Also, first service is at 10K miles, and I'm assuming it must be done at a Mercedes dealership? The technology piece is really driving me crazy. After 3 months, now suddenly I have to enter a pin every time I start the car, and the app says there is no vehicle paired with it. I put in the VIN and information, and it says it's already paired. Makes me want to rip my hair out. Can't get anyone to call me back from the dealer, of course!!

There is always an open invitation to go back to your selling dealer and have your sales guy (or a "genius" like for BMW) show you the ropes of the new car. They understand you may not have a ton of time on the day of delivery so don't be afraid to go back. As long as the GLC is still under warranty, I would always get my service at the dealer.

Does your car always exhibit this weird behavior when your range falls below 50 miles? Somehow I think this is incidental and what you're describing falls very much in line w/the 48V battery failure described here:

I haven't ever let it fall below that mileage again. Sometimes I think there's just too many electronic parts and pieces on this.

This is true of most cars going forward. They need to do that to feel "competitive". Mercedes tends to be on the leading edge of the technology curve and we are undergoing some of the worst products in recent history. Back in the 80's and 90's, computer software was issued w/high operability and it had to be through in-house testing and debugging (patches and the internet were not prevalent then). As we entered the 2000's and beyond, companies realized they could issue post-purchase patches and development times became shorter and shorter. Customers now became the beta-testers as many products were arguably barely out of the alpha phase. This is where Mercedes is now. In their conceit, they believe they can do as well as a dedicated "tech" company but are realizing that the most sophisticated software needs tons of development time and user experience (UX) feedback. When PC software doesn't work, your Word doc or Excel file crashes. When a car OS fails, it may not start the car or exhibit strange behaviors like what you're seeing now!

Although I decided not to take delivery on the GLC I had ordered simply because of the extraordinary amount of issues that it was experiencing, I do feel badly for the current owners. I really don’t understand why you still love your car. I would be hating it with a passion and if these problems persisted, looking for MB to be buying it back. It has been a nightmare for more than several owners, I happen to know 2 of them. One of them I believe has already been given some compensation for her troubles. The electronics in your GLC is highly sophisticated, however, I’m fairly certain that there are numerous other cars with equally sophisticated electronics that are performing just fine.
Should the issues be resolved and you still own the car at 1 year or 10k miles, whichever comes first, no it is not a must to have your A service done at the dealer. I would however recommend that if not done at the dealer it be done by an independent shop that specializes in MB and the like. The price for the A service, which is really only an oil change, is about $300 or more at the dealer. If done independently keep your paperwork so if needed you have documentation that the service was done. Good luck

Or maybe because aside from the weird glitches it has a really great engine and drive, useful technology, and great design? I had a 1999 Volkswagen Passat wagon 5 speed that was a total lemon, but whenever it was working it was an awesome car. Fantastic drive, smooth clutch, great efficiency, absolutely killer in the winter even without 4Motion, and it looked great. So even though it was frustrating and unreliable, I knew I loved the car and held onto it as long as I could bear. Anyway, a lot of the issues probably stemmed from a minor flood. I should have gotten insurance involved. Hindsight is 20/20.

I had a 2001 Audi A4 that I ordered, like I usually do, direct from Germany via the dealer. In its first year it left me stranded due to a faulty control board. The board was replaced under warranty and I kept that car for 13 years. Loved it. I am enjoying my 2023 GLC, so far no problems.
