Talking Impulse Buy GLC AMG 63

Hi Everyone,

So I walked into MB the other day just to see how well I fit in their newer SUVs (I'm 6'7") and I walked out with a GLC AMG 63.

I've never purchased a car on impulse before, and I'm not quite sure what came over me, but I'm honestly thrilled with the decision. I'd been looking for something larger than my GTI (don't judge... it's fantastic and I'm keeping it), and I was all over the map as I was considering all of the following: Accord Touring 2.0, Avalon Touring, CT6, Regal GS, Range Rover Sport, Cayenne, Tundra, Ram, etc... Yes... all over the place.

Anyway, as a tall driver, I typically look at two things which most people take for granted:
1. The placement of the rear view mirror - Most rear view mirrors (particularly those in luxury brands) are mounted quite low on a windshield. Gone are the days when a mirror was mounted on a double reticulating ball joint which could be moved up for taller drivers. Now, nearly every mirror is mounted on a single ball joint and accompanied by massive amounts of electronics. Though the GLC mirror is on a single joint, the mirror placement is sufficiently high so that I can actually see out the front of the car without laying down into the second row.

2. Second row seat space - A car gets a big thumbs up when I can fit behind myself, not because anyone my height will sit behind me, but because it's a good measure of seat design, headroom, and space in the footwell. Obviously, bigger cars are better for rear seat space, but that's not always true (I can't sit behind myself in a GLS). So when I sat behind myself in the GLC, I was excited to take it for a spin.

So, given that I fit beautifully in the car, I drove the GLC 300 and loved it. It had great visibility, good performance, and just felt like an excellent, medium-sized package. Next, I tried the GLC AMG 43, which on paper would seem to be my first choice, but I struggled with the throttle response. I found the AMG 43 was easy to drive slow, or REALLY fast, but not easy to drive at a medium pace (which is where I like to drive). I was a little bummed because, while I prefer sporty cars, I didn't really think I'd want the AMG 63. But if the salesman was willing to pull it off the floor for a test drive... why the heck not, right?

I made the decision to buy the AMG 63 just as I pulled out from the parking lot, somewhere between 0 mph and 15-mph. I doubt I'm alone on that.

I'm not on forums very often, but I signed up and will keep tabs on the discussions. Thanks for sharing your pics and experiences. It's a blast to share in the excitement.

Cheers,
John

GLC AMG 63

Congrats on your purchase ..........I picked up a 63 coup for the wife last month, and options were Ranger Rover Sport, Porsche Macan and first time MB owner couldn’t be more happy with the choice.

Congrats and great choice. I did a ton of research and waited over 9 months before acquiring my GLC63S. I looked at the Macan Turbo (you need the performance package just to stay in the game) and test drove an Audi SQ5, they need an RSQ5 to compete. BMW needs to get the X3/4M out or they will never catch up. The car is simply a beast.

Thanks! My brother told me about the X3M as I was driving away with the GLC63. Not sure it could be better.

I’d say the X3M will be equally impressive, similar to the E63S and M5 comparison. I got the 7/75 extended warranty. It’s pricey, AMGs always are more. But if you don’t use it and get rid of the car within the new warranty period, you get your money back. Too much to go wrong not to hedge with the ELW.

thats the warranty I would buy, but the dealer quoted $7,000. That sounded excessive, so I’m planning to call around for better pricing.

nope never purchased one in my life, and thus far no major repairs on anything I’ve purchased. All my Porsche’s have been rock solid .........also don’t keep too many cars outside of warranty.

Does anyone know any details about the AMG academy? My salesman mentioned something about every new AMG sold comes with a free track day at the AMG academy, but I'm not seeing any information about it in the literature.

Thanks!

Thanks!
Go to www.amgacademy.com and sign up for your free track day, ASAP! I just did mine at the end of June at COTA and it was absolutely phenomenal.

Good luck!

Hope you enjoy your ownership, and don't hesitate to ask if you have any questions.

AMG warranties can be quite expensive, and that's spot-on pricing for the warranty extension on a GLC63. Here's a snapshot from the VMI, which lists all available packages and their prices for the vehicle. You'll see that the prices start around $4500 and go up past $8000 for the longest coverage:

Granted they are expensive with any discount, but so is the vehicle. I offer all MB products at just above dealer cost for MBWorld members, and of course would be happy to assist. You can purchase the 7 year/75,000 mile ELW for $6605. As Nationalleaguer stated, all ELWs may be cancelled and refunded anytime before the extension period begins for a 100% refund. Anytime after that, the refund is prorated back to you based on time and claims paid. The policies are valid at any certified Mercedes-Benz dealer in the United States, and can be processed in just a few minutes.

Let me know if you have any questions!

thanks for some good info there.

what would 5/100,000 warranty cost from you?

Thanks for the info and I'm glad you had fun. I just checked the schedule and it looks like every date is filled, so I added my name to a waitlist. I suppose they will announce the 2019 dates at some point and I'll have to sign up quickly when they do.

Nice wheels. I'm on a waitlist now as well. I suppose the odds of getting called in are pretty low.

Thanks! Yeah, events seems to fill up pretty fast. You have a year from delivery to use your free, class voucher. If you haven't done so, also sign up for the AMG Private Lounge. They will usually announce the new schedule (2019) sometime in December, if I'm remembering correctly and a bunch of other useful info over on that site, too.

Congrats on the 63!

Not a good one. Don’t go into a dealer and buy something you discover you love that day. Also, tell your wife what you’re up to, she might raise her voice and save you a lot of money.

Still McLovin it? I think and hope these cars are terrific!

I want a GLC63 very much but won't let myself buy things before they depreciate substantially and stand the test of time. I think these things will do both but am totally jealous of those who buy them new!!

Nope didn’t mean it that way. I only pay cash for cars, and just enjoy life because I’ve worked my *** off.

Don’t worry about another man’s money or how he chooses to consume it.

If you are worried about the depreciation of an object I suggest you find another hobby lol

I accept that cars depreciate. I just refuse to suffer MB/AMG rates and amounts of depreciation over their initial 5-8 or so years. I'm happy that others see it differently. No need to chase the latest shiny objects in order to enjoy great cars (or whatever) as there have been so many of them made over the years.

In the end, they are just things...but I still like them.
