WTF no 2022-2023 GLC63 AMG???

Hi all, I have a recent bit of a hard-on for the GLC63 AMG S non-coupe. They did not make them in the USA and I read that for 2022 they produced them in the regular SUV non-coupe style finally in the USA. So I go search Auto Trader and Cars.com to fine one and to my surprise......Zero! Nothing above 2021...WTF! Is this true? Pick your search engine and put in 2022 Mercedes-Benz AMG GLC 63 S and there are several articles about it coming out with the S variant in the non-couple style. Looks as if none were produced in either variant at all for the USA...is this true??? Anyone know the details? Thanks in advance!

Regards,

LF

There were no AMG V8s at all in the USA for 2022. Some resumed towards the end like the GLE. It was reported that they had a quality issue with the V8, but never gave any details and it was put on hiatus. It was speculated that it had to do with the ever stricter rules on emissions and a change they had to make to the engine didn't pan out for certain markets. Keep in mind the US has lower octane fuel than Europe. 91 AKI in the USA is only 95 RON in Europe, which is midgrade. Premium fuel in Europe is at least 98 RON.

It's all speculation on my part, but one suspicion I had was that they couldn't get the numbers with 91 AKI anymore. Not sure what's gonna happen. There are supposed to be final editions of the C63S coupe and E63S, but none have been seen or delivered. Supposedly a few E63S final editions have been built, but they are still sitting in Europe and production is rumored to end at the end of March. Haven't heard anything about the GLC, but it's pretty much done, too. The 2024 GLC is gonna be all new and the new GLC 63 will likely have the same 4-cylinder hybrid powertrain as the new C63 has. The only V8 AMGs that you can get in the USA at the moment seems to be the new SL and maybe the GLE 63, but I haven't followed the latter.

While mbusa.com is not always the best indicator, most 63 models have been removed. I just checked, the GLE 63S coupe and SUV are still listed, so is the SL 55 and 63, but everything else is gone. The AMG GT is still listed, but the entire GT production had already ended last summer. Notice that the only 63 models available currently have 48V mild hybrid, so it's got to be something emissions related.

Will be interesting to see the direction, G63’s are still being delivered/ordered. We all know post 2023 the next G-wagon is electric.

2020 GLC63
In mid-late 2021 MBUSA announced the US will finally get the GLC63S SUV in MY2022. No less than a month later MBUSA announced they will pause production of all V8 AMG models citing "supply chain" issues. All orders for GLC63, GLC63S, and other Mercedes 63 AMGs were cancelled at that point. MY2023+ is a entirely new generation and the upcoming GLC AMGs they will be 4cyl electric hybrids.

As of late 2022 "supply chain" issue seem to have improved but it looks like MB is reserving the M177 / M178 (4L V8 bi Turbo) for the high dollar AMG cars. (G Wagon, GT, etc.) In all likelihood the V8 GLC63 will not see production resume.

Disappointed for many reasons!

Hi everyone who commented. Thank you for your explanations, I appreciate it! This whole worry about emissions, cutting production of one of the best engines ever made, and going all electric is just total I am angry at Mercedes Benz AMG for caving to the nonsense. I do not want to get political so do not bother to answer if your goal is to make me "see the light!" Do not bother! Anyway, I guess I need to pick up a 2021 and keep it forever! Thank again to all!

Pretty much everybody who loves this engine has the same sentiment, but can't blame AMG. It's either that or billions in fines if they miss their fleet average. The main issue with AMG is that they are part of Mercedes-Benz and because of the total volume of cars, they are subject to the strictest rules. Other smaller performance brands sell less cars, so they need to meet far less strict rules. This is for example why Fiat spun off Ferrari again, and now Ferrari can negotiate their own fleet average. I've long said that MB should spin off AMG, but that's not gonna happen unfortunately. Too big of a cash cow.

It is rumored that the former chief of AMG walked out of the board room when the decision was made to move away from the V8.

If you are in the market for a pre-owned 2020 GLC63 SUV mines will be up for sale soon. I am located in the SF Bay Area however.

You mean the former former head of AMG. Ola Källenius just removed Moers' successor, Philipp Schiemer as the head of AMG and replaced him with the younger Michael Schiebe. Ola actually just canned a bunch of execs and replaced them with younger blood.
