Owning Out of Warranty

Im surprised and disappointed that I never new they made a GLC63 until last night.

I feel like it may be the perfect replacement for my 2004 CL55 when/if it finally sells. Plenty of space for the kiddos and plenty of grunt to keep me entertained.

How is the Hot-V M177 motor to own after the factory warranty runs out?

My wife has the GLC43 and it’s a great little car. Has been extremely reliable. The 63 would be nice. Can’t comment on the M177 my ML63 has the M157.

A GLC63 under 50K miles with a clean CarFax would make additional warranty coverage very affordable. You can send me any online listings while you search to have same warranty numbers in your pocket when it is time to buy. Funny hearing though a McLaren MP4-12C owner concerned over our of factory warranty repairs given their reliability reputation.

Not sure how you missed that there's a GLC 63, but not important. When it comes to the M177 and the M178 for that matter it appears we need to differentiate between the LS1 and LS2 variants. The LS1 variant is found in the C63 and the GLC63 as well as the AMG GT, although the C190 GT uses the M178, which is the M177 with a dry sump. The LS2 is used in the E63 and up. The LS2 appears to be widely affected by a leaking RMS (rear main seal), caused by the clogging of the oil separators. It's an expensive engine out repair and it's happened multiple times to some owners. The LS2 has redesigned oil separators due to packaging constraints and they appear to be prone to clogging. There have been a couple of cases of LS1 variants with an RMS leak, but those look like isolated cases for now. In general, the M177 LS1 so far appears to be fairly rock solid. Some years have known issues with the coils, but AMG extended the warranty on them to 10 years or 100k miles.

I have a 2019 C63S Coupe with ~40k miles. Most of the mileage was front loaded from before the pandemic when I did a 2 months European Delivery with it and drove almost 7000 miles. I don't daily drive and since the pandemic I haven't done any long road trips, so I drive it about 4000 miles a year. It's been out of warranty for several years. I never buy aftermarket warranties. They are generally a money maker for whoever sells them. They wouldn't exist if they weren't huge profit centers for the companies behind them. I have no qualms over owning my car out of warranty. The powertrain has been rock solid. I had one misfire a while back, which was resolved with an ECU update and I had initially issues with the oil level sensor giving false low oil warnings, but that was also resolved finally with the same ECU update. Honestly, great car with a great powertrain. Love the 9-speed MCT transmission. Was not a fan of the 7-speed in the PFL models (<2018). If you get one, I'd recommend you get a FL. If I remember correctly that means 2020 onward for the GLC 63. It was facelifted after the C63. You get updated cabin tech etc., and several other critical parts that failed in the past such as the dynamic engine mounts and the electronic locking differential in the S models were revised and improved to make them more reliable. The non-S models had a mechanical LSD before the FL, just so you know and no dynamic engine mounts on the non-S models for the FL or PFL.

BTW, in the USA only the non-S for the SUV was sold. If you wanted the S you had to get the Coupe.
