A note about CarPlay on the 2020 GLE

For music my Pixel Phone becomes a music source toggled to on the input selection like radio stations. Assume Apple would be the same. Connects BT and works pretty seamless connecting back mid song where it was when you turned off the car. I don’t do podcasts so??. The Mercedes Nav is very good and I use it most of the time. I wouldn’t say it’s better than Google Maps in function but the full screen display, integration and graphics make it more pleasant to use. You can ask Mercedes for a lot of common destinations by name but it still isn’t as good as Google Assistant for tougher less common things. I can still access Google Assistant by long press on voice even when the phone isn’t plugged in USB. I’m impressed overall and it should get better with time.

If you start CarPlay first anytime your press the Nav button in the car it will pull up Apple Maps. You could still get to Nav by going out the the main MBUX screen and then navigating to the Nav, but if you do the Nav first and you have an active route then the Nav button will pull up the MBUX Nav instead of Apple Maps.
I hope that made sense lol.

MacRumors is pointing out in their article that was just updated that "Mercedes-Benz is adding wireless CarPlay support to its MBUX infotainment system, which will debut in 2019 A-Class models." Wondering what that means for the 2020 GLEs.
Apparently there is also something called "autoplaybox" which can provide wireless CarPlay to any Mercedes vehicle right now, as seen from YouTube video "CupMAWdXqj0" I would however advise against 3rd party hardware / apps due to security & privacy concerns.

Has anyone upgraded to IOS 13 and checked out carplay with MBUX whether you get full screen? I read somewhere that with IOS 13 upgrade we might get full screen. Can't wait to test it out later in the evening when i get out of work.

the limitation is on MBUX and not iOS. The E-class has widescreen CarPlay since the beginning.

I was with my SA today to go over issues with Android Auto and the TouchPad. He plugged in his iPhone and not only did it work with the Touchpad but he had Car Play Widescreen.
We got interrupted before I could find out if he had done anything different to his phone. Probably not because he didn’t say anything when I commented. My GLE had all of the updates last week so that might have been included in one.

I believe for CarPlay, the widescreen is both the system dependent (MBUX) and the iOS dependent (new version from iOS 13?). Maybe the SA updated his iOS to 13?

I have ios 13.1 update and our GLE 450 was delivered just 2 weeks back, built 9/6..so i assume it has all the latest MBUX updates but carplay doesn't play in widescreen mode for us either. I wonder what the SA had that made it work.

Yes both the phone and car need their respective updates. Phone is easy as Apple directly distributes that but vehicle updates would go through the car manufacturer first...

I haven't tried this on the GLE since it hasnt arrived yet, but tried this on the wife's car. Should work the same.
Before update iOS 13 or 13.1, if you would use a different app on the phone while using carplay, the screen would mirror what was on your phone. For example, you are using waze to get around on the screen and you open notes or reminders or whatever on your phone, the CarPlay screen would exit the waze app. Now they are independent. You can leave waze open on your CarPlay screen, and open a different app on your phone and the CarPlay screen stays on waze. Was a major gripe.

Apple said on WWDC earlier this year, iOS13 would support second video stream to show e.g. navigation in the instrument cluster. I could not find any confirmation that this feature was actually delivered.
On the other hand MBUX can already display some info (e.g. album art and song name) in the instrument cluster - it works on my E coupe 2018.
I presume once apple implements this - it also needs respective MBUX update. I noticed my MBUX was just updated yesterday, but I haven't noticed any changes in that area.
1. Does anyone know if MB will retrofit this functionality and release relevant MBUX update so we can enjoy apple's navigation in the instrument cluster?
2. Does anyone know if Apple actually released this pre-announced functionality in iOS 13?
Thanks,
Rafal

I found a wireless CarPlay dongle by Carlinkit on Amazon. Had it a few days and doesn’t always connect without rep lugging it in. I’m going to test it a few more days.

I'm also waiting too... No difference for me with iOS 13 update on the iPhone but then I don't think my (Australian GLE) MBUX has had any updates since delivery back in July 2019.
I would mention that Carplay feels a bit unstable now with 13.2 on my XS Max. For example, sometimes just freezes and stops playing Spotify and Carplay becomes unavailable (and MBUX switches to the normal Bluetooth phone control). Only way to fix it is to unplug it and plug in again. I'm using original Apple USB C to Lightning cable. The spotty audio is also an issue when I use Siri to respond to messages where the audio becomes choppy despite using a cable.

Launching CarPlay Takes Forever
Has anyone experienced delays launching CarPlay? Most of the time, once I start the car and connect my phone, "Starting Apple CarPlay" message takes very long time to disappear. Then, I have to manually navigate to the "Phone" function to display CarPlay interface. Sometimes, CarPlay launches without delays, and automatically shows up CarPlay interface. I'm wondering whether there are any tricks to fix the delays. I have an iPhone XS Max with iOS 13.2.3, and the MBUX version is FUP2.
Any update for the Carlinkit dongle? Is it a more seamless experience comparing with wired CarPlay? Thank you.
