Center console question

Good morning all,

I have noticed a small area in my center console, in my new GLE, that has a key icon in it. It’s down below the removable tray. I didn’t see any mention of it in the Manual but admittedly I haven’t checked the in car manual yet.

Is that an area to program a new key fob (like my old Cadillac had) or is it something else? I’ve read somewhere about digital keys but I assumed the digital keys used the wireless charging area especially considering how small the center console area is.

Also, if it’s not the digital key section, how do I setup that up? I do t see using it on a regular basis but it would be nice to have as a backup method of getting in and starting the car if the key fob as been lost.

Thanks!!

I have been told by a dealer that this is an area where you car, in certain circumstances, may require you to put your key there. I don't know which circumstances exactly but I guess it is about safety.

If it's like other cars, if your key fob battery runs down (and no longer triggers normal functions, like starting the car), there is usually a place to put the fob to allow an emergency start. Seems like that might be it...
