I too did not care for the way it worked and turned it off the first day, and it stays off for most driving, but it still is active when using cruse control. I am actually OK with that.

Mine too, as well as last year's 450. It's in the menu. I also turned off Speed Limit assist and Route Based Speed.

On my Audis, Porsches and VWs, there are 3 stages of intervention and I kept mine on the lightest but even the middle setting was okay. MBs setting is way too abrupt.

Standard and sensitive in UK, works well on standard.

GLE 400d V167
Cannot switch off Permanently

So took my V167 GLE 400d to the dealer ,after having a MBUX glitch, asked about the ability to turn off Lane Assist permanently, as I was able to do so on my GLE W166 and C205 , the dealer went into bat for me with Mercedes Australia, quite gallantly I might add, all to a resounding "No Can Do" from Mercedes Australia, citing it is part of the passive rating for NCAP !!!! So have to persevere with turning the thing off each time I drive the car...disappointing to say the least .

I also find the Active Lane Keeping (ALK) far too aggressive, and the braking might fight me for control, so I have it turned off.

On my '20 450, built in built in July '20, I was able to turn it off permanently, and now the new '21 AMG53 also allows it to remain off forever. At least the hard braking is off and I don't have to tell the car every time I start. I don't know if there were updates on either, but my selections stay put.

However---- I sense that, while driving with Distronic active on winding roads, the car seems to slow 2-3mph as I follow another car, even though that car draws away from me (keeping a constant speed).
It feels like "Route based navigation," (RBN) which uses a combination of reading curve warning signs and GPS, slowing well in advance of a corner, to speeds far lower than I like. I DO NOT LIKE the Route Based Nav and I have it turned off, like the Active Lane Keeping. Or maybe it's the Traffic Sign Assist, reading imaginary signs - which I also have turned off.

So it seems like there's some "residual" ALK and/or RBN, or TSA, still doing something. Or, it could be that going around corners just slows the car more than the Distronic can overcome, or something. It's not as potentially dangerous as the ALK, but still causes cars in a line behind "that guy" holding us all up, to accordion behind me. Imagine an AMG holding up traffic!

Sorry for the long-winded description, but we ARE loaded with technology, and sometimes it's hard to separate the effects of features. Alphabet soup.
Any ideas?

I am hoping that there is a software update available. Mine just doesn’t work right in Distronic. I have Traffic Sign Assist & Route based Speed turned off and mine still brakes for lower speed traffic signs. It’s exacerbated by the fact that it misreads signs frequently at lower than posted, i.e. 80/60, 75/45, higher at 35/65. At times it changes the set speed, other times it slows but doesn’t change the set speed. I discussed this with the Dealer in January but decided to wait a few months to see if a TSB might appear if others have a similar problem.
On curves I sense that mine is slowing at times by misreading a fixed object as a vehicle. It has happened when there was no reduced speed limit sign.
I had some of these same issues with my GLE 450, they were fixed after recalibration of the Camera & Radar that were apparently out of sync. Distronic has been around for a long time. Malfunctions like this doesn’t make me excited to try a self driving vehicle any time soon.
