That is a poor idea, IMO. The car will run, but you are giving up performance, economy and will have a dirtier engine in the long run (both internally, and with emissions). The engineers spent a lot of work optimizing the engine, and you are compromising it. The manual recommends against using low ocatanes on a regular basis for reasons. Use Premium. This is not an cheap econobox.

The manual specifically requires premium. It DOES NOT say recommended. It says requires. It even tell you what to do if you have to put regular in. Fill with premium as soon as possible. Why is this even a discussion?

On a somewhat related topic, I do know of people who lease vehicles that the manufacturer recommends premium fuel and the only gas ever used was regular.They wrongly believe that they are just using their vehicle for 3 years and then turning it in. The unsuspecting buyer of this preowned vehicle may be purchasing a car with more engine wear than the mileage may indicate due to the lower octane used for 3 years. The dealer selling the car is either unaware of this or more accurately doesn’t care. I purchased my GLE so therefore I will only use premium. The most common explanation by the person using regular is “it runs the same “. I would love to save money and use regular gas, however, the manufacturer recommended premium for a reason.

Almost always, it unlocks the performance potential, and the car is more pleasurable to drive.
It can be pretty noticeable.
