Question Upgrades and Retrofits

Hi Everyone. My new GLE 450 with AMG package just arrived and I'm already looking for any interesting styling and performance upgrades that can be made. Unfortunately, I can't seem to find any aftermarket stuff. I noticed that eventhough the car has been out for a year, there are virtually no bodykits, aftermarket exhausts, and so on, except the one body kit recently launched by Larte Design. Why is this? Still 'too new' or just no interest for this model?

So at this point I'm essentially thinking that I might as well go with GLE 53 upgrades, at least the ones I've been able to get a quote for:
  • GLE 53 diffuser kit (includes skirt, tailpipes, mouldings, etc)
  • GLE 53 front bumper mouldings (there are six parts included)
  • AMG 21' Multispoke wheels (A16740134007X23)
  • Sideboard (probably non-illuminted)
Stil waiting for these parts to show up in the MB system for order:
  • GLE 53 sports exhaust
Also thinking about Panamericana grill, but I actually like the Diamond Grill look. Anybody else have interesting add-ons? And I don't mean glove compartment organizers...

Amazon had the Running Boards if that’s what you mean. No lighting but lots of parts. I bought a set and returned them after I realized that they were probably OEM from a China source. Also my wife changed her mind about wanting them. My guess is the OEM subcontractor in China is making extra that they move out the back door to be resold by another party. The package also include roof cross bars. They looked Factory with stamped embossing on the inside with what appeared to be part numbers and dates. They were for the AMG body and required removing the lower trim piece below the doors. There were no install instructions. I reported this to Amazon but they were still offered for sale months later, haven’t checked recently.

I think demand is not enough for a lot of manufacturer interest, and the focus is usually on the AMG models. There will be better selection eventually.

- Why didn't you order the 21" wheels? These were posted 3 weeks ago; not sure if still available: https://mbworld.org/forums/market/770937
- As far as exhaust, with the AMG Line Exterior you already have a sport exhaust with active valves - not sure how much different the GLE 53 one would be.
- Some like the rear spoiler, and that could be retrofit without much issue.
- If you don't have AMG Line Interior, the studded pedals are easy to install.

Hey,

I am in the same boat, always looking to do something custom, can't have stock.

GTHAUS is working on an exhaust according to their response to my question here: https://mbworld.org/forums/mb-suvs-t...uv-thread.html

Are you in the US? Curious, where do you get a quote for the GLE 53 diffuser kit?

Thanks

In Europe - Romania. I got confirmation on the schematics and compatibility but they can’t quote the 53 exhaust just yet. Told me to wait a week or two.

Do the grill ASAP. Then let me know how it went so I can be sure it will work for me when mine gets here!
Plus you get a better looking grill anyway.

Reviving this old thread .... Not sure if the thread starter finished this mod but I just installed the GLE53 rear diffuser and tips on my 450. I was looking that the Brabus tips but they ended up being more than the full rear diffuser from MB so this was the obvious choice....

VERY interested. Care to share more details? Is the mod just the gloss piece c/w the tips? Or the matte plastic above, as well? Wonder how this would look without the night package, but sport package with selenite grey.

do you have the link of where you bought it? It looks way better than the current exhaust tips.

Everything was ordered through my dealer and I had their body shop do the installation. They did a perfect job, it looks 100% factory..... Here is the list of parts, total cost with labour was around $2600 CAD

One thing to mention, the diffuser is different if you have the towing hitch. They initially ordered the wrong one so keep that in mind .... It's also different if you have the night package. The exhaust tips are silver for the non-night package cars.

Thumbs up

Looks pretty sweet. Might do that on the 450 as a weekend project. What was the cost of labor, if you don't mind me asking?

Labour was 2.5 hrs ... So depending on your dealer's labour rate, around $250. I'm not brave enough to attempt this type of job as I didn't want to risk breaking any of the hundreds of clips used to secure the trim pieces.

Nope. The gloss black trim came as is, I think that's standard with the night package version. That trim is chrome on the regular sport package. The rest is the dark grey matte finished plastic.

So, the replaced piece includes the matte black area with the sensors and reflectors in it?

Yes, that entire matte grey area is new. The moved my sensors and reflectors from the previous one.

It's worth the money to get OEM instead of jobber parts. When you make the change, you have factory finish. Could you not just change the tips?

Unfortunately no, it's a completely different rear diffuser assembly. The Brabus solution replaced just the tips but it was more money and didn't look near as good IMHO.

The diffuser is the same one I have on my GLE 53 night package except the Grey piece is black on mine.

Hmmmmm, I thought my diffuser was black? I thought they only made these matte plastic trim pieces in one colour... The sun in the previous pic does make it look very grey, its much darker in reality, see below. Is your's darker than this? I hope they didn't order the wrong part again !

That’s more like it Chris...mine looks about the same. Might be that against red it looks very slightly more black with the naked eye but with a camera probably exactly like yours.

Thanks Ron. I just drove to a nearby dealer to confirm that they didn't install the wrong diffuser. They are all the same dark grey colour so it's all good. Your comment got me a bit worried! Lol.

It appears that there is a gap on the right side of the 2nd exhaust tip is that normal?

If you are looking at the spot to the right of the tip, that’s a shadow...the diffuser is one piece but recessed there.
