Yes, I had the same. Was able to push the top part down so that located / locked into the bottom part after pulling the rubber strip away from the metal to open up some space.
Just poor assembly, rather than an actual fault.

Thankfully nothing that software updates, a bit of work with a toolkit, and a few recalls hasn't fixed, but still... not as good as it should have been.

Assembly quality
Yes, I have it at the edge piece, Since the overall top & bottom panels fit tightly, I have to think it's purposeful. Your top & bottom do, however, seem to be misaligned fore-aft.
Overall I think the assembly quality on mine is very good, as good or better than any of the other 3 MLs I've had.

I have the same gap. I agree with Greg that it appears designed that way. not elegant, but sufficiently hidden from view to not even be an issue for me whatsoever.

However.. my experience will influence my decision to buy another MB when the time comes, and based on this car, I probably won't buy a launch year model again.

They didn't intend to do a bad job ? They are working for a prestige car manufacturer who should have quality control in place to make sure they do a good job every time.
There is no excuse, they need to tighten up quality control if they are getting faults on assembly. Identify the faults in the production process and rectify them.
You can't give everybody a group hug all the time.

But it was my choice to buy a very complex car in its launch year. Yes, they could have done a better job on QA, and I'm disappointed they didn't, but rather than get upset about it, my decision is to fix it up, learn from it, and not buy a launch year model again.
I respect that your approach may be different, but I don't want to pump up my blood pressure on a car that I will own for at most 5 years.

I'm sure they are (and have been) ironing out the production build problems, and cars built in 2021 will be flawless (or at least, a lot better assembled).

I have always bought one of the first of each generation since my '98 (received in '97). Yes, there have been issues, but always well taken care of. This launch as we all know was really messed up, the worst of the four I've been a part of. That would not keep me from ordering first year again. And, as I said, my 4/19 build seems really well put together. Only issues have been software related, which I'm afraid will become the new quality control issue going forward.
