Broken Engine Mount

2100 miles on vehicle (6 weeks old). It was running like a dream.
Came to a stop light, eco stop engaged, and when it restarted it went "BANG".
Idle then was very rough and exhaust note was more of a rumble.
Went to dealership and guess what, broken engine mounts.
The service manager said he had never seen this either.
The dealer was able to provide a loaner (GLC300) and parts are on order.
Never in 40 years of driving have I had an engine mount break.
Anyone else have this happen?

Wow, that is rare. I've never heard that happen on a new car.

The eco stop puts a strain on everything! Another bright idea right up there with the Obama gas cans.

This place is a joke.
Yep! Seen it happen already. The mount is a bad design, it's PLASTIC pressed into a metal housing....from the BOTTOM! That means all the weight of the engine is pushing down trying to press the plastic center back out where it came from.

My GLE 35 2018 model (two years old - 20k miles) has had a ticking noise which has been driving me nuts. Dealer has had it for 4 days and has struggled to find it. They took the car for a drive with some sound equipment? and say the engine mounts need replacing as they are damaged. All being done under warranty but it sounds very strange indeed. As anyone else had this issue?

Engine mounts are part of a long list of Mercedes frequent-failure items. Infant mortality as the OP experienced is less common. Failed engine mounts is very common for this brand.

Thanks for the quick reply. Thinking of changing to a GLE-43 Coupe. I guess that might have the same issue. Seems a bit strange that a ticking noise (like a injector or belt) issue would be this but I can tell when I pick it up tomorrow.

Mercedes motor mounts are a consumable item, meaning they wear out like brakes or tires, I am very ensconced in the MB pre owned market and mounts really don’t last much past 60k miles with many failing much sooner than that. We feel the biggest contributor to failure can often be speed bumps, or rather the failure of the driver to creep over them. MB mounts are the softest in. The auto industry and the act of going over a speed bump at any velocity over a crawl causes the motor to leap up and then crash back down. Soft mounts mean no motor vibration being transmitted through the car at idle.

Agree that softness does deliver low/no vibration at idle. Mounts that fail as early as M-B mounts fail is due to poor design. Insufficient quantity and durability of materials. It is a trivial exercise to design a mount with the same vibration isolation, that lasts 20 years.

Traveling over speed bumps is normal, something that Kia, Toyota and Ford vehicles do every day. And M-B vehicles.

M-B has cheaped out on this feature. Not surprising.
