The metal weave is gorgeous. We have it on my wife‘s E class and I have it ordered on my 580. When I’m at cars and coffee most think it is carbon fiber (which I’m not a big fan of for the price).

I like the metal weave look but do not like the piano Black on the center console. Maybe I am wrong assuming this but the E63S states a piano Black center console. Does the GLE580 with metal weave get the piano Black console?

I believe it does. I remember one of the GLE’s I drove had some wood trim with the black piano lacquer center. I honestly would rather have all black piano lacquer. That’s what’s in my ‘16 400 and I love it. I honestly has held up pretty good.

Anyone looked into or thought about swapping the diamond grill for the panamerica? I looked the other day when a 53 and 450 were side by side and they look very similar. I think it should be able to be done pretty easily although a sales person the recently said it would be a problem with the distronic and wiring. It looked like the grills were the same and I thought the distronic was a simple pop out, unplug and replug and then a recalibration from the dealer. Thoughts?
(if I can make sure I can swap the grills I will not hear anymore from my wife and she will be “all in” on the 580.)

Personally, do not like both grills. And in my, I'm sure minor opinion here, "standard" grill looks less bad than AMG (panamera) one. One thing is for sure, it is more functional in protecting radiator than AMG one.

It appears the MB electronics are all in the MB round crest. The grill is separate from this. The opening on both cars is the same, therefore the grillS are inter-changeable. Should be very easy to do. Then change the exhaust tips and install the small chrome insignia on the front Fender. Oh, I almost forgot, add the AMG insignia on the rear tailgate and replace 580 for 58 and voila, you have a one of kind that outperforms the GLE53 and looks the same. You are not a poseur because you designated your car as GLE58. Go for it. It will look great.

Most wives will get over it.... in a few years. I wonder if the AMG grill is even available to order. Someone checked this out earlier and didn’t get a positive response about fit or availability. You might need to have someone with a 53 fake an accident to get one.
Edit: I said that because at my Dealership parts are ordered by vehicle ID. I don’t recall exactly what the parts guy said but I thought it was a Mercedes procedure. Just ordering wheel locks and a Cargo mat he needed the SN. There’s probably a workaround.

I have found that my dealer will order just about anything as long as you give them a VIN of a car that I want the part from and then pay them. I have used a VIN off of a car I found with something I wanted on Autotrader before and used it. I do believe though that I will have trouble actually getting a new grill anyway.
As for the wife getting over it, she constantly reminds me of how well she remembers things.

I like the AMG grille over the AMG Package grille.

But you made a good point about protecting the radiator. That is a great reason not to change the grille.

Thank you for the offer. I will keep it in mind. I’m waiting for some time to take some doughnuts and coffee to the service department at my local dealership and try to persuade one of the techs there to help me look and see if it will be an easy swap. The tech usually responds well to Krispy Kreme.

You can write down a VIN of any of the few hundred or so listed for sale on the web GLE 63s or 53s and pass it to MB's parts department.

My wife likes the diamond grille better, I like the AMG one better. That's why she is getting her own MB now and can have her diamond grille and Bengal Red/Black Nappa leather seats 😂

that’s probably your best bet. Within a few months the AMG grill will be on eBay. I would have bought a 580 if they were offered in Canada. You get more car for the same money as the 53.

Well yes and no. With 580 one clearly gets a superior engine (hope noone will argue with that). However, with 53 one gets arguably superior handling suspensions out of the box. But if equipped with optional AMG63 brakes and suspensions (while both not available on 580 from the factory, at least the brakes can be quite easily installed later), 53 would have a significant handling advantage (it would also make I6 to cost more than V8). While certainly a compromise, it is just what is more important to a given buyer.

I’m leaning towards to AMG53, but really hoping to get your feedback. Concerned because the 450 was lacking for me, but the handling/dynamics of the 53 seem impressive given the weight. There doesn’t seem to be a straight discussions on here so All insights and opinions welcome. Seem to be somewhat same price range of similarity specs versions.
I had a Porsche Cayman on lease when they first came out in 2007. Also owned a 02 911. If handling is your concern even in the slightest then no SUV is for you. With the being said personally I would go for the 580/450 instead of the AMG version. I find performance SUV to ride too harsh for my liking. No matter a 580 or AMG these new GLE’s are incredible cars and they have improved leaps and bounds over the years compared to the old ones. You are buy one hell of a car.

Have to strongly disagree.

No-one compares SUVs to outright road sport cars like 911/M3/C63. However, W166 ML/GLE 63AMG SUVs (especially GLEs) will out handle most so called "sport" sedans on the road and I'm talking the ones made by Mercedes (i.e.: I took roundabouts at much greater speed without crossing a lane in '15 ML63PP than I could in '19 E4504W).

And since you agree that 167 is much advanced compared to 166, 167 AMG SUVs will handle better than most non-sport cars on the road. People who want SUVs no longer have to compromise handling vs. cars, hence AMG SUVs. When I drive ML63 (and to a lesser degree GLE43) I drive them exactly like I would a sport sedan, something that was impossible with my former '14 ML550(it was great accelerating, but handling?...it is an other story).

Since this thread is about the 53 and 580, lets talk about something that has only been touched on in one entry (#25), resale value. Which do you think will hold a better value? Probably not a big difference but I see the 580 being a little better since it will be V8 (Americans love V8s), smoother riding/driving (but most will never test drive different ones in the resale market to see a difference), and it appears to be a little more of a niche vehicle.
Anyone have another input?

I think there will be fewer 580's, that may help a bit with resale.

No more MB:(
580 for sure, I wouldn't be surprised if they discontinue offering the V8 for the GLE in another year or two. 53 is really not that special.
