Wheels Question

Hello All,

I picked up my 2020 GLE450 last night ! I absolutely love the car. Sadly I had to say bye to my old ML350 Bluetec, she gave me 5 years of trouble free service.

The 450 is Obsidian Black with the night package, I'm not a fan of the standard 20" wheels, I feel they should be bigger on this vehicle.

I found a set of wheels from a 2019 GLE63 Coupe that I like, however my dealer tells methey won't fit. Apparently, the offset is off by 10mm on the front and 90mm on the rear. I'm not an expert on wheel offsets, is this truly the case? What is the impact of the different offsets?

The AMG wheels are also wider and the bolts might be 14mm vs 15mm on your new car. As I recall, the AMG are 10” front & 11” rear with a different tire front and rear. The wheel size is probably different maybe 21 vs 20 if you have the AMG body on your 450. You could drill the wheel for 15mm. There are online calculators to show the difference. My thought would be to actually try one to see if they fit. With a 14mm guide pin you might be able to slip one on to get a visual. You would also need to replace your tires with the larger wheel.
Check the Winter Tire thread for lots of fitment details.
Another option would be to buy aftermarket wheels that will work with your existing tire or get a larger AM wheel with new tires. Mandrus makes wheels specifically for Mercedes. Also Vossen and other premium wheels have options and dealers with fitment experience.

Thanks for the reply. I'm certainly not absolutely stuck on these wheels, a good aftermarket product would be fine, that was my next question .... I would welcome any suggestions on good aftermarket rims for the GLE450. I prefer the staggered look with wider wheels on the rear.

I found these and I assume they can be ordered locally. They are 23" though, can anyone advise if they will fit on a 2020 GLE40?

UPDATE - for other forum members that may be interested, here is the link to the 22” GLE580 rims on the Mercteil site https://mercteil.com/product/retrofi...-for-gle-class
*******
Keep in mind that there doesn’t seem to be any tire manufacturer that makes all-season or winter tires for the OEM GLS580 23” wheels.

Below are links and prices to purchase the 23” GLS580 rims and 22” GLE580 rims from a dealership in the US.

They have the 22" rims on their website also. They are very similar, I would go with the bigger option if it fits. I'm still trying to get an answer on that.

Should fit as widths and offsets are same as OEM 22s. Difference will be the OD will be larger by an inch, which is quite a bit. RPMs on 23s would be about 3% slower than 22s.

GregW, the widths and offsets are different between the 22” and 23” OEM rims. The 23” rims have widths of 9.5 and 11.5 and the 22” rims have widths of 10 and 11. The 23” have an offset of ET45 and ET47 and the 22” rims have an offset of ET56.1 and ET50.

If you want you can go with slightly lower profile tires on the 23” wheels so that the total diameter of the tire is much closer to the total diameter of the 22” stock tire. See pic for comparison (23” typically come with 35 rear, not 30 rear).

That looks amazing. I have the exact same car, black with night package. Can you provide details about your wheels? Are they the same front and rear or staggered? What are the widths and offsets for front and rear? Did you require spacers? Thank you !

10” x 23” same offset (don’t know it off the top of my head) front and back with a 30mm spacer on the back to fill the arch.

285/35r23 tyre all round too *edited tyre size

lowered on custom spring set up by approx 25mm

I’ll get offset tho from the paperwork 2moro

Any particular reason for not using 295/35R23?

my mistake I am running 285/35R23 - this was the recommended tyre size to keep the rolling ratio as close to standard

I'm having a tough time figuring out my wheels delimma. I would like to go up to 21" or 22", however, from all the research I've done, it appears that anything over 20" requires a staggered setup with summer / winter tires. I hate the whole changing wheels back and forth so I was really hoping to stay with a good quality all-season tire. Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Here are two sets for factory 21” setup from Tire Rack.
If you buy AM wheels with the same front and rear wheels then there are lots of choices in the 275/45 R21 10” front wheels. It’s the rear that are rare. These are H rated to 130MPH speed.

Thank you, that really helps !

Would you recommend getting the same 10" size all round similar to the setup I currently have? Not sure how well a 315 all season tire will perform in the winter months ?

Not sure what the dilemma is. It is actually very simple. From posted above, your 450 is equipped with square 20" wheels/tires. You want to go to 21" or 22". You do NOT need to go staggered, unless you want to. Staggering is NOT required. MB chose to equipped 21" and 22" option as staggered fitment. You can go 21" wheels with 275/45-21 or 285/45-21 at all four corners or 22" wheels with 285/40-22 at all four corners. All before mention tire sizes are available with good quality A/S tires, but not necessarily MO labeled tires.

A. not sure 315 will fit upfront, B. not sure it should be mounted on 10" wide wheel (10.5" minimum), C. and am positive that 315 will be an adventure in snow/ice you do not want.

Not true - the factory RW/RWB 21s are staggered but fitted with All Season tires (Pirelli Scorpion Zero A/S on mine). Not ideal for snow, but fine for less severe conditions.

Those setups are the same as the factory size 275 45/21 for a 10” wheel front and 315/40/21 for the 11” rear wheel. That would mean no new wheels.
if you are going square front and rear then you could probably run 9” x 21” wheels. Most tires have a range for acceptable tire size...didn’t check the 275. My advice would be to work with a tire guy specializing in wheels. I think BB Wheels is one. ThIs forum has a section for vendors where they advertise and show pictures of lots of Premium wheels. The reason I say that is because there are nuances to fitment like larger brakes, wheel offset and the new for 2020 GLE 15 mm stud bolts. I’m waiting for my 53 to go much farther researching this to see if my existing wheels from my 2020 GLE will fit. I will get my 53 with the package that has the large brakes, even larger than the AMG on the 450, 580. It would be easy to overlook a fitment issue but the 450 has been out long enough to get some good Vendor info.
