2021 Mercedes GLE450 improved gas mileage
I noticed on mbusa website that the 2021 GLE450 now get 21/26 mpg improved over the 19/24 on the 2020 GLE450. This is slightly better than the 19/26 mpg on the GLE350 4 matic. Any ideas why? I am leaning towards getting one after dumping the order on my 2020 GLE450 when Mercedes fumbled the production on it last year.

I have driven both 350 and 450 and both got higher mileage than originally stated by MBUSA. Infact, my gut feeling while driving 450 was that with the ecoboost, it is capable of getting higher mileage than 350 if driving conditions remain the same.

Probably just updated marketing... They realized the actual fuel economy was better than their advertised numbers so they are adjusting accordingly...

Fuel economy is set according to the EPA test cycle. It can be performed by the Manufacturer, but it is spot checked at the EPA Ann Arbor test facility. I have visited and watched - the car is set in a big bag to capture ALL byproducts of operation (and weighed). After an overnight soak to normalize the temperatures, the Standardized Driving Cycle is performed on a treadmill. Internal combustion EPA ratings can be beaten in real life. (I have no idea how the "MPGe, electric equivalent mpg" got past science. Actually I do, and watched the Lobbyists do their political thing - but not science.)
We get upper 20's (@29) with our 450, in mostly extended driving, including 80-90 mph, battling rush hour etc. Yesterday, after moving 1 mile in 45 minutes after a crash ahead, we still got 24.5 on a two hour drive, air conditioning on. I am convinced that Ecoboost really enhances mileage.
It's actually better than our 2019 GLC300 with it's 2.0 four, by a mile or two in real-life driving. It's also a mile or two stronger than our BlueTec diesels.
Since the EPA rating procedure is standardized and repeatable, either the EPA cycle / procedure has been changed for 2021, or the EPA has decided to give a favorable "factor" to mild hybrids, or the 2021 actually gets better mpg.
