Update. SA texted and had me a loaner ready around 11. Went and picked up a GLC300. Service then called and verily humbly said they had no idea. There were no codes or problems that they could reproduce.
There should be some way that if a car shows a CEL that code should be saved somehow somewhere. I do find that part totally unacceptable with the technology we have today in cars.
They are keeping it a little longer (I’ll check in the AM) and driving it some more to see if it happens again. It’s annoying but I have kept very cool so far with them. I know they are trying because the app has been sending me messages constantly all day.
As for the video, I’ll just keep that to offline (for now) since my egotistical self went off on the poor guy that answered the phone. I totally agree with being nice first, and even maybe second, but later.........

I hate hearing stories like this.
Partly because my 53 is scheduled to start building next week, and partly because my 450 went back because of sporadic Stuff that they couldn't duplicate.
Are they using the dealership end of the Mercedes Me function to monitor the car? I think they can get almost real time feedback, when you have it out on the road.

@mikapen I’m not sure on that. I’m using the Mercedes app and I have it set to tell me when the car starts, cuts off, left unlocked, and leaves the geo fence area. I do find it odd that they were not able to diagnose anything last night from the phone call though.

Make sure when you return the loaner the windshield wiper reservoir is empty!

The last time I had a loaner a white paint bucket fell off a truck in front of me and I ran right through it in the black GLC. So far, I’m one up on them.

Just picked up the car. They supposedly went through everything. Even had the SM drive it home since he had a short drive on the interstate which is what I had just got done doing when it messed up.
The verdict........nothing found, performed as usual, and no codes stored. I’m not really upset (yet) and just hope it doesn’t happen again. But I am really floored that the car did not and will not permanently store some type of trouble code.
Oh well, back to driving this great car with fingers crossed.

Hopefully it was a one time thing. If it happens again try to video record it if possible.

My wife did this time, but without some “code,” service doesn’t know what to do to it.

I don’t know your area but if there’s other dealerships you should check them out and see if they can do better.

When one doesn’t cooperate/know why they’re doing I just move onto the other 4 in my area

Well I spoke to soon. The piece of $hi# has done it again. While backing into the garage tonight it started. I noticed that it starts off slow with no light and then builds to the light start blinking.
I haven’t decided if I’m going off tomorrow (If I have time to make it there) or being really cool one more time.
I’ve got this one on video too.

This is just a shot in the dark, but was the last time you bought gas at a station that is modern with probably new tanks? A long time ago I had a problem with a car that turned out to go away when I used another station. Whatever the problem is, it's a problem and you would think these modern cars should record some sort of code, but glad you documented it with your phone. Thanks for sharing with us as I am close to mine coming in (supposedly built today?).

I filled up a half a tank of gas on Monday and drove most of that day and then again Tuesday till it had the problem that night. Tonight I filled up a 1/4 empty tank and drove about 7 miles to my house before it started again. I had brought home carry out so I went straight in. I just went back out, 9:00 and everything is fine when I cranked it. I got gas both times at Costco.
I have had another Mercedes years ago get bad gas and one thing I remember was that the car then had no power then. This time when I was driving Tuesday and it happened, it had power but just very shaky. One weird thing though is both nights have been at 7:20pm. First time I remember calling MB at 7:20 and tonight the video starts at 7:19.

I'd be done with trust in the vehicle at this point and push towards buyback. Twice before even hitting four-digits on the odometer is unacceptable for any vehicle, especially one of the GLE's price. Hope your dealer can make things right.

A little bit of water might do that, Ethanol likes water. Costco moves a lot of gas so pretty unlikely you got any there. Locking gas door so not a prankster. Very odd.

After watching both videos again tonight I noticed something. In the first video the CEL was constantly on, but also shaking more. In the second video the CEL was just blinking, but I didn’t drive the car as long after it started this time. I was only backing into my garage.

My Recommendation (my 2 cents for what it's worth)
  • Contact and speak with the Service Department Manager Directly
  • Email him the video, and tell him (calmly) this is unacceptable in a brand new car
    • Be profession and calm, get him on your side
    • Don't attack his department's incompetence and make him defensive
    • Ask what he would do in this situation, after he just spent $100K of his hard earned $ on car?
  • Since they had it, didn't fix it, and gave it back to you and on the same day it happened again, tell him you think it is reasonable that:
    • They come and get it at your house and drop off your loaner car -- this is a reasonable request -- my dealer does this
    • You expect him to contact Mercedes and work with them to diagnose and fix the vehicle, as something is wrong
    • You will not accept the vehicle until they (with Mercedes) identify the problem and fix it.
    • You will not accept the answer we couldn't find any codes and therefore did nothing
  • In meantime, familiarize your self with the details of your State's lemon laws.
    • Don't make any threats yet, but know when it would apply -- this the second time for the same issue.

Oh well, back to driving this great car with fingers crossed.
Remember that most everything to do with the CEL is mandated and controlled by EPA/ODBII. MB could of course build onto it and use internal memory, but it's pretty much a closed system.

Just got back home from dropping it off. Was very nice to service but sternly expressed my dissatisfaction. I even showed them the videos and emailed them to service, GM, Sales Manger, sales advisor and service advisor. I explained how upset I am that I just spent 95k less than a week ago and 113k about 15 months ago and the reaction I’m getting from the dealership (not service). Service gets it and is trying. They gave me a GLC loaner and I’m going to be very vain here but the car sucks. I pushed back on this loaner and they told me they only had one GLE in the whole dealership to loan out and it wasn’t available. (One additional thing that pissed me off. The GM called me the first time to tell me he was giving me a courtesy call to let me know that someone was going to drive my car home to test it out. His almost exact words were, “ we don’t need your permission to do it anyway since you signed the paperwork in service.” Hey jerk, the car was towed and I haven’t signed anything.)
I have now reached out to friends to at least find an attorney that deals with this type of stuff. With a car this expensive I don’t mind paying a small amount to get some advice or at least have their name and number ready.
I am also searching for contacts at MB (manufacturer level) to get the emails going and at least start notifying them there is a problem. If anyone knows a good email or contact here I would appreciate it. The more I can get involved the faster and better I might get this resolved.
Again, I really do want the car, just defect free. It is one of the best driving and looking SUV in that segment to me. It is so smooth to drive and seems to have a lot of power (with so few miles I’m getting it broke in before I really use the skinny pedal).
Thanks for letting me rant and all the advice.

I find it hard to believe that a car that will tell you every minute detail of its history down to tire pressure warnings from years ago and bulb out warnings from new would not have a stored event in the computer for this kind of thing.

Good luck. Mercedes seems to have really dropped the ball with the 167

Send a letter via FedEx to the CEO of MBUSA. Like most companies they have an office of the CEO customer service escalations process which is very good. Concierge like.

I used it when a dealer took a deposit and couldn’t get an allocation. Worked wonders.
