Code : Too much oil

My 2020 GLE 350 just set a code "too much oil". It occured near the local dealer so popped in. Was advised this has happen to several cars not all were GLE's Solution since you cannot check oil levels shut car off for one minute restart and if non-reoccurring drive it to destination then bring it in at your convienence for a scan check of that system. They changed the oil (20,000) last week but today was the first code notification.

This happened to me a few months ago. They had me watch to see if I got it more than once, because my service advisor said the sensor can throw occasional erroneous readings.. Ended up seeing the message daily - mostly occurred at highway speeds. Apparently, they overfilled the oil during a recent service - had to drain it and refill again. Here is the message I kept getting - have not seen it since.

Yes same message. Yes they are going to have to change the oil because no dipstick to accurately check oil levels

Is kind of a shame, really. As you said, there is no easy way to measure or to lower the oil level, so they change it and throw away almost brand new Mobil 1.

Yes I am very fast loosing interest in this vehicle due to the quirks with it. Also don't get me started on the very loud wind noise at interstate speeds plus no spare tire. I'll admit my E300 has no spare but it has a dipstick and no extreme turbo fluctuations as this car does even though the same engine.
Yes, as was explained to me even though oil was changed last week the procedure is to drain oil and then refill and check sensors even though a "junior" service writer thought there was a way to check the oil accurately with the diagnostic computer. Stay tuned although I have driven many cars throughout the years that I inadvertantly filled by an extra quart and never worried but on those I had a dipstick and knew what I had.
Oh, just to add to this the Senior service writer told me that they had a vehicle show too low of oil after a high oil level reset.

I did my own oil change and it was frustrating. Since it was the first one I filled it short one half litre less than the capacity of 9 litres to ensure it was not overfilled. The reading was not available for 10 minutes and eventually showed low >1 litre near MIN after warming. The manual states that it takes up top 30 minutes of driving to get an accurate read so I went for a drive. It later showed down 3/4 litre so I added the half litre. Next time I drove it I got the overfill warning which went away. Next time I checked it was bang on and a few days later it was short 1/2 litre, which is where it is at now. I thought it could be a leak as the wrong torque spec (discovered after) for the drain plug is written on the oil filer case and worried it was not tight enough. I know I put the required 9 litres in so I removed the bottom pan again to inspect for a leak and put the correct torque on the drain plug. Who knows what the correct oil level reading actually is and it should be better than this. It still shows down below MAX but have left it where it is with 9 litres installed and no leaks.

I think you'll end up ok - I agree, the sensor method is imperfect because it must take some reading that is averaged over time, so it doesn't tell the tech anything right after they put the oil in. But - the tech can easily meter how much they put in and overfilling is probably a fairly rare occurrence in any case, so once they change it, you won't likely ever think about it again.
