You can drill down in the menu and decrease the sensitivity. I did, and dragging a charge cord across the pad no longer makes it activate some unexpected function.
I can't remember the Drill Down location, but you can search the Owners Manual (in the display) to see how to do it.

I am guessing now there is not a way to turn it off (although there was a youtube video to do it in an older MB), so I might try making a sleeve cover if it continues to be an issue.
