I personally had successful experience with both the center control (inside of the armrest) and the front passenger side USB C port in term of map update. I haven't tried the driver side one yet so can't speak to that port.
Was able to successfully use port inside center storage - turned out to be operator stupidity as I bought out the wrong USB drive before (duh). After updating, system restarted and I thought update was completed. I unplugged USB drive and it reported an error. Tried updating again but it said car already had newer maps..

I got that same error message this time also. Same results as you. In the past I must have removed it when the screen said it was rebooting. I just don't remember. Another strange thing this time, the download manager said that it would remove everything on the USB stick. It didn't. I ran out of room! Had to manually delete and download again.
I had the same error you did on last map update, but on the most recent one, after it rebooted the MBUX system (don't remember if it happened on previous update), I don't see the error message.
Does anyone know if the Mercedes Me Download Manager has been rewritten for Apple silicon native? Would hate to have Rosetta running just because of this one app, all my other software is apple silicon native now.
We now have as of Jan. 22 2022 the version 361 update available in Canada (sorry V360 in title is wrong). I don't know why it takes 8 months for the same data to filter down to us in Canada. I manually downloaded the updates. The automatic update does not work well for me and i am guessing it will be worse with the switch to T Mobile who uses the Rogers cell network in Canada AFAIK.

Reason: version correction

The Mercedes Me Download Manager is a Java app, so it's the same app regardless of the OS and silicon. You just need a native JRE.

Does it depend on the province for who that contracts to provide cellular network for Mercedes Me Connectivity services? When I go to the renew page it shows powered by AT&T despite being a Canadian vehicle? For your province, was it AT&T and now you say they are switching to T-Mobile?
The automatic updates are pushed in batches so it might take 3 months or more to reach your vehicle (as stated on the site) but manual is usually the better way because you can't get speech data updates through automatic updates anyways.
As for the version available, it says V22.0 (2021) and map version 400 for me so I am not sure what is going on. That being said it isn't a GLE, so maybe that is why?

The map versions are not the same between MBUX and NTG 5.5. The latter is on version 400. This is just an internal version number.

I have a GLS X167 and the version is 16.1 and maps are v361. Canadian vehicles did use ATT and whatever ATT has arranged for a partner in your part of Canada (Ontario I assume ) will be the one that is used. ATT partnered with Bell in Ontario and I assume all of Canada. They are changing over to TMobile and they partner with Rogers for the most part but I don't know if that is true for all of Canada. What model do you have?

I see, I personally have a C so runs the older Garmin maps and doesn't have Mercedes Me but I was talking about it based on one of my family member's E which has an active map subscription for a few more months.
I am in Alberta and they are using TMobile, though I have no clue which local Canadian telco TMobile is using. TMobile has no physical presense in Canada
Yes, they do, but only for your configured home region. It doesn't automatically update the voice recognition, though, which is part of the map update.

Just as superswiss explained, plus it takes a while before the automatic updates gets pushed to your vehicle as it rolls out in batches and not all vehicles at once. Depending on the cellular connection of your vehicle, the speed may vary too.

Sigh, see the update on Mercedes Me. But when I launch the download manager, it cannot see my usb disk. All I get is "Storage Medium not found". I can point it at my disk for the 'local cache' and it seems to take it, can see it in the dialogue for defining the local cache, but still never finds it when I launch the download manager. What am I doing wrong?

Your USB disk needs to be partitioned using the MBR scheme. GPT is not supported, and some disks/usb sticks come pre-partitioned with GPT these days, because of modern OSes. You'll have to re-partition it.
Thanks, superswiss... reformatted to exfat/mbr one of my usb drives. Now it lets me select it as local cache, and creates the directory, but then tells me I do not have permission to use the disk! Aargh.

Oh wait a minute. Don't put the cache directory on the the same disk. That won't work. The disk has to be completely empty for the update files. The cache directory is where it downloads the files to first, and then copies them to the final media.
