Thanks, guys, am on a mac. did this once, so managed before, but now am feeling dumb. it did see my usb drive and start the download process once you told me the cache directory is NOT the USB drive, and I pointed at a directory it could use (duh). Hey, only have to do this every 6 months or so... :-)
On my Mac, I used the Disk Utility to erase and reformat the USB flash drive into the Exfat format. The Mac and the MB Download Manager program were both able to see the drive. Once I connected to the MB using the USB-C to USB-A adapter in the non-carplay port near the cupholder, it only took a few minutes for the dialog box to appear. I went to software update under System on the main screen, but I don't think it was necessary. After each update, I used Disk Utility to erase and reformat because the Mac OS Finder could not read the files. It really is easier than it sounds.
I was looking at the app and see that the OTA update is available for my car related to the map (I haven't update mine yet as it is in the shop). Either I am very lucky to see it that early, or Mercedes is starting to push out map OTA update faster.
Roughly yes. Ignition on or off doesn't matter. You can also just leave the USB stick in and go about your normal driving. The update will proceed in the background, pause whenever you park, and resume next time you are driving. That's what I usually do instead of sitting in the car for 30 minutes, draining the battery and waiting for the update to finish.
1. NTFS works, too
2. In private browsing not needed
5. Yes, remove drive while rebooting, otherwise it may detect the update again, but it will recognize that it's no longer applicable, so doesn't' really matter when you remove it.
Alright, I just have to figure out how to plug a USB stick into a microUSB port.

Yes, it's Type-C on newer cars. Personally I prefer using an SD card, because it's much more secure when inserted and doesn't stick out to accidently get knocked out of the plug while driving.

I got the same update last night except mine says Canada and Alaska.
decided to download the entire country for my GLE 450. which of the usb ports do I put the drive into? its very confusing since the one on the right in the front cupholder section is the ONLY one that the dash cam sees and uses and for some reason the one in the armrest cannot play media when the one in the front is in use. its very frustrating to not be able to use the dash cam AND play media at the same time. regardless the primary concern for me is which port do I put the stick into in order for the system to update the navigation. thank in advance

I normally update with a USB but let it do its thing over the air this time. After it was done, I was prompted to restart the system for the update to take effect. I thought it would restart the GPS but it rebooted the entire system.
Thanks ! Just did my maps (all of N.A.) manually. Took about 20 minutes to load them all into the car. Formatting the USB as ex-FAT was the key. Until I read about that, I kept getting the error from the download manager that it could not find my device to write to. Should have slowed down and read the forum all the way first ! LOL

It took me almost 40 minutes to load all of North America. I have my USB drive formatted as NTSF. I'll have to reformat as ex-FAT for the next update to see if that makes a difference.
