Key Fob

I accidentally found a safety function available with the Key Fob. I assume this is intended to help in an area where you don’t want to risk a car jacker jumping into a side door as you enter.
You can switch between unlocking all doors or just the driver door and gas filler lid. Several months ago my car started opening only the driver door (I had not changed anything so a new glitch). A dealer tech tipped me off to the option so I checked the user manual and found this instruction.

That's good information to know. And it's good to make sure each operator is aware of the settings on each key - especially if they are in a dark parking lot with nobody else around. If the two keys are set differently, which key are they carrying?

Yes, that feature is to make it safer for one person to open only one door, so a hidden intruder can't jump in the passenger seat if all the doors unlock simultaneously. I think M-B has had this feature at least since at least the 90's. Also the VW group and BMW.

There was a spate of incidents that made news in the 80's, when keyless entry was making inroads. Bad Guys were taking advantage of the new tech, stealing cars and worse. Having an optional "Drivers Door Only" setting fixed that, but only if the owners were aware of the function. Thanks for posting!

As to the change several months ago, did you install, or re-install a key battery sometime back then?

No changes...appeared one morning after working normal the day before. I unlocked the car and my wife was still trying to get her side open. There is no way that I did it accidentally. I have a few other minor gremlins on occasion.

These functions have been in the handbook since the V167 was released.

Yeah, but I'm only up to page 1,356. Lots more reading ahead!

What say??? People actually read these things! I gave it a try but kept falling asleep after 15-20 pages. A light bulb just went off...this can be my cure for those nights I can’t sleep.

Download the .pdf and try searching for what you need, if you can guess the applicable keyword(s).

Is the manual available in pdf format? Do you have a download link? The local Mercedes website does not have it.

.pdf format. Go to the mbusa.com home page, scroll all the way down, under Owners, then look for Owners Manuals. Click on the link and you'll see options for all the models.

Note this feature is FOB specific. You must do it for both keys.

Kinda wish this is a feature where you can toggle in the Vehicle setting like most cars. Doing this button combo deal is so old school GM / Dodge way of things!

That would defeat the individual preference of each driver. M-B's is a better solution than forcing every driver to have the same setting, instead of their individual choice.
In my experience, most couples prefer different individual settings.

What surprises me is that M-B cars don't sense the individual keys, and adjust the car to that owner's settings - seats, mirrors, vehicle dynamics, etc.

True, but BMW does save that unlock-all setting into each key. Not the case with other manufacturers. Heck BMW saves the climate settings and even sound settings! You can also save that driver profile into a USB, then load it to your next BMW.

I think that's true also of VW Porsche Audi, and maybe Land Rover. I'm not familiar with non-Euro keys, but in my experience M-B is the outlier in this area. You have to select the Profile by tapping the screen.

I don't think it would be an advantage to migrate my seat settings from an X5 to am M3, though.

It took about a month but my 2021 GLE 450 learned what settings profile to use based on the fob as long as there is only one set of keys in the car.

Are you saying that your GLE adjusts to your profile by recognizing your key fob? If someone else used the vehicle and adjusted some settings, your fob would be recognized and adjust automatically?
