GLE350 Oil change and weight

In the GLE manual it states that the oil specs just need to meet the typical 229.51 spec (Per MB Bevo). Within the 229.51 spec you can have anything from 0w20 to 15w40. Manual says use the lightest weight oil for best fuel mileage. I am less concerned about mileage and more concerned about longevity. Anyone explored oil weights. I think the dealer likes 5w20 which is light for hot climates where I live.

Taking delivery of new GLE 350 with AMG body option early next week. Excited but still skeptical of the little 2.0 liter.....

I would stick with the Mercedes recommendation and the lower number of 0-20. The first number is cold temperature viscosity so it won’t be a factor in a warm climate. The second number doesn’t care about cold vs warm since your engine temps are controlled by the thermostat and will remain constant after warm up. A lower first number might help reduce friction with better startup lubrication.

Today’s engines can easily run 10,000 miles with 20 weight oil and with out adding between changes. 20 weight will have less friction than 30 weight so slightly more power and better fuel economy, maybe slightly better engine life. As to longevity…you will get lots of opinions pro & con. My experience with 3 higher mileage vehicles has been very good using 0-20 weight oil. None have seen increased oil consumption after 40-50k. One truck with lots of towing miles (close to max weight) did not change much at 55k when I sold it. I did change oil at 7500 miles. You might find some decent technical info with an Internet search.

Any oil that meets the manufacturer’s requirements will work. Differences between grades have zero impact, good or bad, in practical terms. MB engine oil and filter are in stock at Advance Auto Parts and others places. It’s not secret sauce, just plain old oil and a folded paper filter thingie.

I disagree….

Lower viscosity formulations flow faster and smoother through the oil pump, requiring less energy to transfer lubrication throughout the engine. They reduce friction between the piston compression rings and the cylinder walls, minimizing metal-to-metal contact and prolonging the life of your engine components.

In simple terms, the word
viscosity relates to a fluid's resistance to flow. Most later engines are designed to use low viscosity engine oils to reduce internal drag. This takes less power from your engine, reduces fuel use, lowers exhaust emissions, and improves engine responsiveness.

@Ron.s Can’t disagree with the scientific recitals. What difference does the information have on the average users, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Sixpack?

I ran into that same concern during my recent change....given different climates around the country, I decided to ask my local dealer what they use....

You are probably right but OP asked the longevity question.

Getting High Mileage

I too have had several Benzs go high mileage. I have my 95 E300 and it has 312k and seriously does not use oil. My wife's 04 E500 uses the 0W-40 Mobil 1 and has just over 200k.

I may just roll with 229.51 approval 5w30 MB oil.
