Tell us what year and model you're talking about, please!
You might consider putting it in your signature block, along with your X5.

I don't believe it's possible without aftermarket software.

GLE350 (2021), 991.2 (2019)
Mid City Engineering has an OBD2 Programmer for about $150 that will allow the system to "remember" the last setting upon restart.

I used it for my 2020 GLE350 and it works like a charm. Never wasted another thought on that annoying feature.

RJ can do it: https://rjautomotive.net/
Buy his dongle and he can set it to remember the last setting so it won't default to on every start.

2022 GLE 350 AMG SPORT
Im planning on purchasing the OBD module from Mid City Engineering, Im just waiting for conformation that it will work on our new 2022 GLE 350. Their website says it works on the 2021 model so im almost certain it will work on the 2022. The auto start / stop feature is the worst feature ever designed for modern cars. Cant wait to shut it off.

As had been reported before, on the 450 it is quick, seamless and not a bit of a nuisance. Also good on my ‘15 M4. So, it’s not the feature itself, just the implementation on the 350 it seems.

+1 for @rjautomotive . Just did this for my wife’s vehicle. Top notch experience with guaranteed results, plus, look up the link posted above. There’s other goodies you can have coded while at it.

Cheers,

+1 for @rjautomotive here. Really enjoy the mods he did and keeping s/s off is just lovely.

Here we go again…….seamless. . Apparently it must not be on other cars since so many want it off for some reason. Mine is far from seamless and actually annoying as you roll up slowly to a stop.

The great majority complaining of the system are 350 owners w/o the 48 volt ISG. I’m surprised that your 580 is not smooth.

Another example of government over reach in to things that they have no business with. For what it's worth, the unelected bureaucrats at the EPA could consider this tampering with a part of the cars emission controls system and subject you to federal prosecution.

Well, that’s a stretch since there is a switch to defeat it; if not, then yes.

I was actually surprised to find that. Did a search to see if it was a federal requirement or just an easy way for car manufacturers to meet fleet emissions standards. Apparently manually disabling it is acceptable because that's how it was designed. Modifying code however constitutes tampering with an emissions control system. I think it's a stretch anyone would ever actually be prosecuted but it's still out there.

Disabling STOP START stops coasting feature

After playing with my settings quite a bit I found that disabling this function also stops coasting or sail mode. My almost 3 ton 580 will coast for a very long time. The engine is off and the trans is disconnected so the coasting is awesome and likely a huge fuel saver. I leave the STOP START function on most of the time now for that reason.

Agree. Disabled on wife’s 350 permanently, but I left it alone on my 53 since it’s so smooth that it does not bother me.

Does it void or limit the warranty? Guessing-no, since so many people seem to be doing it. I'd love to get rid of the jerky auto on/off start but just got my 350 GLE 2022 in September so wouldn't want to do anything that would risk the warranty.

It does not void the warranty.
If MB ever reflashes your vehicle, RAJ will re-code it for free for the first two years, and for £30 after that.

Top notch company to deal with. @rjautomotive is a gentleman.

There is no “jerky auto on/off.” It has been debated here and the proper word is….seamless.
But to answer your question, I don’t think it voids anything (I’m not a Mercedes Benz Executive Referral Manager though) and haven’t heard anyone talking about it doing so.

It is on the GLE350. It’s very, very jerky. That’s the reason we disabled it on my wife’s vehicle.
Now, on my GLE53, it is seamless. Totally different technology and implementation.

Cheers,

My 580 must be old technology then.

Start and Stop should not be disabled
should be set to "remember last"
MB Dealerships are unable to see this as they are total idiots
only thing they know is to push one button to recode as on the VDOK-servers back to stock
They don't have a clue of what a line means and how Hex - Dec work

Okay, "seamlessly jerky" then. Sometimes if I'm sitting at a light and ease off the brake a little without realizing it, it feels like I've been rear-ended. Twice it was so harsh, I actually looked in my rear view mirror to see if I'd been hit. I would love to permanently disable it.
