Yes, you do!

I feel like I own a unicorn as of this announcement. I can't decide if it makes it worth more, or less, though it doesn't matter. I do feel sad for people who have looked forward to a new car of their choice and now can't get one.

That’s true, but since they have several bottlenecks, maybe it’s best to manufacture 2 or 3 smaller engines and therefore better to pump out 3 cars with 3 smaller margins than make just one…

When resources are scarce it’s best to wisely allocate them.

However, I think it’s a bad movement to cancel orders already placed.

Only the 2022 S Class and Maybach will be available with the base 580 V8, no AMG engine option. No other V8’s will be available on any 2022 Mercedes models.

Nuts

They only have 1 V8 engine in question, its the twin turbo 4.0.

In my area a new G63 is selling for 75k over sticker and the dealers love it of course...all that going away will be a shame. Perhaps they will drop the M256 3.0 inline w/48v system in these cars?

I am thinking prices may go up even more on these discontinued and desirable models.

Let’s look at this another way since not many other manufacturers have cut specific engines. Does anyone think that MB knows they have a problem with that specific engine and therefore are cutting it back also in lite if the shortages as well?

Damn, I have a 580 ordered for Nov slot. Still hoping that somehow it would go through. If not, I guess will wait until they get their s**t together.

Doubtful. Over in the W213 AMG thread there was a post that MB will cancel all GLE 580s and they will disappear from the system by the end of the month.

My question is what do you girls and guys think this will do to the prices of used v8 models? Will spare parts also become an issue ? Seems like a double edged sword for anyone who owns a V8.. suddenly I am regretting selling my C63S..

Spare parts aren't an issue. I would expect a spike in pricing on new ones. Inventories will run out soon.
I think you will see a rise in the value of 1-3 yr old models.

Here’s an interesting tidbit…Now why can’t they build the accepted orders in the USA for V8’s yet introduce them for the first time in India? Looks more like it must be EPA related to me! Supply chain doesn’t make sense….

  • Within a month of launching the AMG E 63S and E 53 performance sedans in India, Mercedes is all set to strengthen its AMG lineup in the country with the GLE 63 Coupe, which will make debut today.

As I've said, this is an emissions issue.

Except there is no official confirmation of the "leaks," which also say "discontinued......... subject to market conditions." Which may mean that they sell to the market demand in the US.

In any case, it's not as likely that it's emissions-related, as much as CAFE-related. The model mix is what determines CAFE compliance.
Maybe they will delay for a year until the model mix includes more 4-cyl / hybrid / EV's, then bring them back.
It's a mystery right now.

I agree, by “Emissions” we are referring to the Clean Air Act but I guess the similar CAFE requirements rule since Cali sets the bar higher. It has occurred to me that the Supply Chain comment might hold some water if they are holding the V8 for a spring release of the 2023 E Performance 63 in the US. Wouldn’t that be a nice surprise? We need more leaks…more fun than watching SciFi on TV.

OK more conjecture that it’s compliance related as an Exec now blames quality as the reason V8’s were suspended. I’m looking for the E Performance to start replacing them since they get 10% better fuel economy. This plays into the new EPA SAFE vehicles requirement that Vehicles get better by 2.5% each year for the next 5 years starting 18 months from mid year 2020. Coincidence? Here’s a Motor One article!

Mercedes Canceling V8s Due To Quality Issues, Not Supply: Report

Many of the brand’s V8-powered models won’t be available for 2022.

Sep 22, 2021 at 6:03pm ET
By: Anthony Alaniz
Mercedes killing off nearly all of its V8 models in the US came as a shock when news broke about the decision last month. At the time, Mercedes pointed to global supply chain issues as the culprit, which seemed plausible. However, a new report from Road and Track muddles the situation as the publication has AMG boss Philipp Scheimer quoted as saying that the engines being canceled is due to a “quality issue.”

Scheimer would not elaborate on the specifics, though he did say that Mercedes wasn’t satisfied with their quality and that it’s doing some retesting. But the issue doesn’t affect every model in every market, which further complicates understanding the reason behind the company’s decision. Potent V8 engines are a cornerstone to the brand’s pricey AMG performance brand, and pulling them from the US market where they’re popular came as a surprise.

However, not every Mercedes V8 is disappearing from the US market next year as the V8-powered S580 will still be available. But another layer of confusion comes from Aston Martin, which uses Mercedes-supplied V8 engines. In August, the company told Road and Track that Mercedes’ stoppage would not affect the British brand’s products, which uses the German automaker’s 4.0-liter V8.

Road and Track is correct in that the likeliest explanation for the sales stoppage is a compliance issue. Mercedes’ original statement about the situation said that the company was focused on complying with “various global, external, and internal requirements.” That would explain why Mercedes is in the process of retesting, though we don’t know what that entails.
