For $80k SUV it sure would of been nice to have. At least they could of plugged up the empty LED light holes.

Sure, they are nice to have, and certainly are not harmful (other than they fail a lot and its not a super-easy replacement, so out of warranty, you are in for extra expenses) and I wish the 2021s had them. But they are literally just lights for a door handle -- that isn't going to change a family waiting by the door in the rain for someone to unlock the door. The locks don't function any differently, and the other lighting (mirror lights, welcome lighting and such) still function the same. It's really only helpful if you think you can't find the door handles in the dark... and for me at least, I can't recall a time where I couldn't get in the car because I couldn't find the door handles.

Agreed. Stock mirror lights put out plenty of light:

Well, you can say this for about any "luxury item" such as air cooled seats, heads up display, TPMS, navigation, etc...

The dealer just confirmed that the lighting was removed for 2021 on later builds. Early 2021 builds still had it. MBUSA attributed it to the chip shortage.

I would think my 2021 GLE 450 was an earlier build as I purchased it in March of 2021 but no door. Handle lights (not that I really see a big need for them).

My April build 450 doesn’t have it either. It would’ve been a nice feature.

TPMS is not a luxury item. It’s mandated by law.

I hope they have hopefully resolved the chip shortage by now.
