GLE 350
HUD + Android Auto/Carplay

Hi folks:

We're purchasing a 2022 GLE and are wondering if we should get the HUD option. The option seems useful only if the directions integrate with Android Auto or Apple CarPlay. I couldn't find a definitive source online which could confirm this.

Do Android Auto and Apple CarPlay directions show up on the HUD?

C450, GLS 63 and a few other things
They do on my 21 GLS. Can't promise the same on a GLE, but those electronics are so similar can't imagine it will be different. Hopefully someone with the GLE confirms for you, but feel pretty certain it will.

I can only speak for CarPlay, the next turn displays in the HUD (and in the instrument panel). But that's all, no other route information. The integrated navigation system shows a lot more detail in the HUD.

As an aside I have a CarLinkit 2.0 wireless adapter and this doesn't work with that at all. It only works if the phone is connected via a cable.

Works on Android Auto too, the HUD shows upcoming street name and turn (and distance to it) from the Android auto directions. It complements the navigation on the main AA screen in MBUX. You can change the main screen to show something other than navigation and rely only on the simplified HUD instructions if you want.

The thing that isn't integrated with AA directions is the instrument cluster behind the steering wheel. You can have it show the built-in map at the same time as you're using AA on the main screen and the HUD, but it won't be the same as AA and won't show the directions.

I just tried it out and have a slight correction to my previous post. You can get the AA directions on the instrument cluster. Not the AA maps, just the upcoming direction (street name + arrow + distance), basically the same as what you see in the HUD. It's only if you switch the instrument cluster to the Nav view that it shows the built-in map view and not the AA map or directions.
