C CTEK 5.0 Battery Charger on 2021 GLE 450

Question:

When I connect the charger, after about 45 minutes, it gets quite hot especially on the bottom but I make sure there is air that can flow underneath. The manual says it has heat temperature control but still am wondering if this is slowly burning this charger out?

It does a great job as it slowly cycles through the different stages until it gets to float. Once it goes off the 3 light bulk charge and into absorption, it cools considerably and no heat on float. I realize this charger is placing a 12 volt charge into the AGM battery and the 48 Volt battery also so it's working. I usually put the charger on when at home because of all the very short trips I take in our small community, about once a week because there's just not enough time to keep the battery charged up. Takes time to get to float.

I would think these are built to operate like this and deal with the hot temperature?

What do you think?

Should only be 1 C in the heading.

Mine feels slightly warm but definitely not hot. At the moment, my MacBook Pro laptop is warmer than the CTEK ever gets.

Mine gets pretty hot too but about the same when charging my 2017 GLE43 so I don’t think it’s unique to the newer battery tech. I just make sure it’s located somewhere to get good air flow and hope for the best. It does seem like it could benefit from a metal case with a fan or heat sink.

How long have you been using yours? I just noticed on bulk charge, it can get pretty hot on the top but more on the bottom. I'm charging a 12 volt AGM and the 48 volt battery at the same time so I guess it's working. Once the charger moves over to 4 lights in absorption mode it cools considerably and in float mode it's cold.

I’ve had mine for about 5 months. I have same car, gle 450. I just used it to top off battery as I had a trailer hooked up with lights on while I loaded a bunch of stuff.
This last time I let it run overnight so I didn’t have a chance to feel how hot it got but I know when I used it in the past on both my cars it got very warm. I think it’s normal.

Thanks for your info. I think the charger has a temperature limit built in so it will only put out so many volts so not as to damage itself. Maybe this is why it takes awhile to charge everything up.

I have a Battery Tender Plus which I purchased in 2014. It’s in perfect condition and always worked like a champ. Wondering if this would work.

It probably would do but the battery tender I have on my wife’s Pilot while away this winter puts out only 1.25 Amps. It does a good job in keeping a AGM battery tuned up but it may struggle with the 48 volt and AGM system in the 450.

As I said I think this is why the CTEK gets hot the way it does until it gets to the 4 light absorption/ float mode.

Thanks for your note. I used it for an Acura MDX that I had in storage for four months. I travel a lot and I just want to maintain the battery while I’m gone. I don’t care about the time it takes to get to the maintenance level. Just want to be sure it’s compatible.
