A little disappointed

Did anyone find the new GLE just lost a lot of utility on the truck? The fix seats lost their recline feature and you lost the fold flat feature of the previous generation. I can't even fit my 3 folding fat tire bikes in the GLE without hitting the ceiling. I won't even be able to close the trunk as well because of the not so square trunk door. The new truck is nice but can't believe they sacrificed utility. Damn.....no choice now but to get a GLS.....

Is that a GLK? I don't think they "just lost" anything, since this generation has been around for more than 3 model years now. Different strokes for different folks.

But I did have to buy a GLS in addition to my GLE due to a Great Dane joining the family. The GLE wouldn't hold a family of four and ski or beach gear.

no that is a 2014 ML350 with the bikes on. The one with no bikes is a new GLE.

It's interesting that you came from a 2014 ML to the new GLE, just like us.
For us and our stuff though, the new version has significantly more space then the old one.

I just want to get this one right as I do not want getting a new vehicle that won't fit the intended purpose. I am just surprised that the utility area of the new GLE got compromised and makes the old one more useful when you are trying to put more than just groceries in the back of the car.

The solution for our ski trips is having a thule storage on the roof. I think I will do the same thing if I get a GLS as I would not like dripping boots and skis behind the trunk.

Side bar: Love our GLE450, however, don't understand why people call these cars (Sport Utility Vehicles), "trucks". They don't even have a frame or separate chassis and are designed to transport people, not cargo per se. Serious, not stirring any pot. Maybe they are classified differently outside of Texas?

Because it is how the Federal Government categorizes them for fuel efficiency purposes. The very first SUVs, like the original Ford Explorer, were in fact built on truck platforms. When people use that term on forums, especially for something like a Mercedes, I always assume it is said somewhat tongue-in-cheek.

I found that the new GLE has lost some of it's utility function compared to the Jeep Grand Cherokee (dimension-wise they are almost exactly the same, pre-2021) and the previous generation GLE. I had to pick up some tables and chairs for Thanksgiving and in my old Jeep GC I would have been able to fit all of the tables and chairs and did it in one trip, with my GLE I had to make 2 trips. There is a lot of dead space in the GLE because of the shape of the GLE. Don't get me wrong I still absolutely love my GLE, but I do wish they would have done better for storage.

It’s a shame, really. It speaks to denial and buyers’ remorse some 167 GLE owners suffer.
Not quite correct, people on here are happy for people who own a v167 to criticize the car but not people who have NO experience of it and constantly add their uneducated comments to any detrimental post. As you will see on another topic on the forum I have moved on after 29 months of V167 ownership and have nothing bad to say about it that should tell you something.

In a way, you need to feel sorry for those folks that have nothing else to do but monitor this Forum looking for dirt. Life must be boring if this is a form of entertainment. Then they repeat the same comments over and over that never add any insight for the occasional newbie looking for answers. The newbie already owns the car so making them think they have a Lemon is really insensitive. IMO, some members (you know who you are) are more impressed with themselves than they need to be. It’s a little like criticizing a guy with a limp because it’s a “known defect” that they learned about because he’s the third person they saw with a limp this year. Like you said…they have no skin in the Game and no one takes their irritable posts serious any more.

Yeah somehow I don't understand it at all. The car is bigger yet it just don't work like the old one. I guess chopping off the vertical lines into a more sleeker looking truck is the compromise to the utility side of the vehicle. If they just kept the original seat configuration on the 5 seat version then it is sold in my books. Right now my attention is into a X166 just because of the damn 2nd row seats not working out to what I want the vehicle to be used for.

For you, with very specific space needs (carrying existing folding bikes in specific tubs), it's important to trial-fit your cargo in any new purchase.
It may cause you to dismiss a candidate vehicle, or re-think your "stuff."

Or @makris0000's table and chairs problem. If tables are your thing, put that at the top of the list of things to evaluate before purchase.

In our case, also coming from a 2014 ML to a V167 SUV, the storage space works much better, and we have some specific needs, too. Not "just groceries in the back of the car." In fact, there's too MUCH room and I've had to add nets to secure things from sliding all over, since they aren't crowded together as with the ML. The GLE Coupe doesn't work at all, even though it's shorter wheelbase makes it more nimble. Trade-offs.

I like the additional room, as well as the better styling, and above all I like the chassis and handling of every V167 from the GLE350 with steel springs to our AMG53 with ARC. I've spent time in each of the configurations.

I just returned a Nissan Armada rental car, which would have immense table and folding bike capacity, but the car was awful.
I'm more pleased at the new GLE configuration than ever! Yes, Sports Utility, with emphasis on Both.

I'm not disappointed.

It was more of a one time thing because my usual worker did not want to work because, you know, the pandemic. Gotta love the labor shortage
