New AMG E53 sedan to lose two cylinders

There are multiple reports that the new AMG E53 sedan will dump the straight six and go with a detuned 4 cylinder found in the upcoming C63 AMG. If this is true, what does it mean for the next GLE 450 and 53? Will it also have the same setup in various stages of tune. That straight six sure didn’t last long. Now there’s speculation that the AMG E53 variant could be pushing 500 HP.

I thought mercedes was going all EV? If that's true, they're not going to invest in development of any new ICE platforms. The best you can hope for is existing stock reworked and rebranded as something they were never intended for.

Batteries and more electronic gadgets is the future no matter how they try to attractively package it. I don't put much weight in articles like these as their business model is to help the car companies sell cars - propaganda 101.

I expect from MY2024 and forward, the only cars that get more than 4 cylinders will be the G wagon, the SL, and whatever they're replacing the GT with.

There's even a chance the GT successor goes full electric, if that happens I think its an official time of death for V8s from MB.

Well, that could be..... for Mercedes.

Then, after the AMG spinoff 😁, AMG will be the stronghold for V8 power. "As markets warrant," per the Mercedes official statement.

Now, with the relaxing of Tier 7 regs, Internal Combustion Engines have been recognized as "necessary." Kind of.

Wont a spinoff make things worse? AMG on its own wont have as many low emission vehicles to lower its fleet emissions average.

Euro 7 regs seem to just make it easier for companies to keep using the same ICEs they have until they naturally reach end of life. Mercedes is already committed to small displacement engines and EVs going forward, with AMG joining in with its E-Performance models.

My guess is we probably get the same M176/M177/M178 in fewer and fewer models until MB/AMG goes full EV by 2035.

I agree, except I don't think there's any such thing as full EV for any manufacturer.

Not enough E for the V's
As they said, "depending on market conditions."
That would include infrastructure and materials mining. It'll be expensive and might even cost a lot of lives, as heating and cooling becomes unaffordable.

Too many eggs in the E basket.

Except the EU already has a emissions ban scheduled. By 2035, all cars sold have to be zero-emissions.
NY and CA adopted the same ban here in the US, same timeline too.

I don't like it. And I have no idea how our infrastructure will support it, but thats what the politicians currently have planned.
I imagine the deadline will keep getting pushed back, but EV is definitely the future.

It's definitely the future,........ until the midterm elections.
I think the CA/NY dominance in National Standards is fading.
That would be best, because their needs are different from the other 2/3 of the country. IMO.

Europe is in worse shape than the US regarding infrastructure, fuel, and resources. They have better Mass transit, but that won't offset the needs for transportation of goods and people.

It made take a few more prime minister changes, but the EU et al will have to make some tough energy decisions. 100% electric is unlikely this century. They can't even decide to go all nuke or no nuke.

I think there are many people in the US who think it's time to quit listening to California.

The US as a whole probably wont do a similar ban anytime soon, that i agree with.
CA and NY will probably stick to it since its damn impossible to flip those states to red (I'm in NYC and wish it'd go back to red).

Europe's fuel crisis is probably more of a motivation to adopt EVs. Powerplants can generate the electricity that EVs need much more efficiently than our ICEs generate power with gasoline. Higher efficiency = ultimately less fuel needed.

Also remember these bans are for new cars, i can totally see 100% of new cars sold being EVs within this century.

(Further off topic, but IMO the big problem with EVs is recycling of used batteries)

The second article has credibility.
The first, well, not so much. Bad sources and wrong information.

I was disappointed that the new 3 L straight six was not equipped with the single axis electric turbocharger, as found on F1 cars, and announced in 2018.

There were many advances in the engine as introduced, even with only the side mounted electric supercharger on the AMG.
Better cooling, reduced friction, faster catalytic warm up and so much more.

I'd expect evolution of the bolt-ons while refining the architecture. Not abandonment.

The four cylinder you talk about is not a "detuned" four, just not as "tuned" as the hyper 476hp four with the maxi turbo.

When you add a couple of 400 horsepower electric motors, packaging enter the picture, and there was no room for six holes. Thus the four.

Agree 100% and would add that many articles are written by freelance people that are after eyeballs more than facts.

Mercedes has released a lot of good information on the E Performance, future engines and electric vehicles. One thing they have not commented about is the GLE series. Most/all next Gen AMG’s will be either BEV, the F1 4 cylinder E Performance (with variations) or a V8 E Performance if I my memory is correct. To some degree the adoption of performance EV’s is still tied to selling more low emission vehicles to meet the annual fleet emissions improvement in the US. As a practical matter California CARB must be met since it’s probably not practical to spend millions certifying two of each model in the US. (One US & one CA)
Most of the YouTube vids are a year old so it might be hard to find all of them & paid sponsors like Mercedes have a sunset on some.. Some were released by Mercedes and some were live show and question interviews with prototypes-Auto Journalist with Mercedes Engineers. If interested one might search on YouTube for Mercedes E Performance to start. Once I started searching Mercedes xxx, YouTube started adding similar suggestions.

I agree, Ron.
I have learned a lot from those YouTube Auto journalists, who do reveals and expose's with factory engineers. Some others, maybe not so much.

The AMG channel is where I found that you can drift with your AMG 4-cylinder, while recharging your batteries at the same time.
Other things, like the evolution of alloy wheels are also on the AMG channel.

You definitely get the direction that AMG wants to present, which is Performance. Making the best of new regulations to improve performance.

It'll be interesting to see how this plays out.

Auto Mundial (Dish 246) and Motor Week (PBS) give you an early look at new vehicles and a little bit of news on Auto Mundial. MW does 1/4 Mile, 0-60 & braking distance.
I usually learn something watching them but keep expectations low. Good TV when you need something late night to put you to sleep.
