Review: 2024 Mercedes GLE 450e PHEV does hybrid the right way
While it has a finite range of pure EV, after the battery range reaches 0 it does not mean the battery is depleted.
It means pure EV is not available but the vehicle can operate as a Hybrid combination of ICE and Electric, but unlike a typical hybrid it has a larger electric motor and available battery capacity.
The long range battery will retain a reserve charge of 10 - 20% for hybrid usage which is 3 - 6 Kwh.
The battery does not recharge from the ICE but does from braking or slowing.
So I expect it is available for significant amount of extended assist but not continuous for miles on end.
Bottom line is if pushing the limits of towing capacity is the goal then it cannot replace a 6 or 8 cyl ICE. But it should perform well for medium duty demands, better than a GLE 350

But that's the way they establish tow ratings, and it doesn't make any difference whether it's electric, gas or pedal powered.
Maybe with the Advent of new drivetrain technologies, they have separate rating schemes.

Why not talk about the wonderful resilience of your PHEV that still gets 35 mi on a failed battery and has an ICE engine to drive you anywhere you want to go while waiting for delivery of the new battery.

The ICE in a 450e is rated 248hp. The 350 is rated 255 hp was a mild hybrid. But that does not take I to account that the 450e when the battery range is used up is still a full hybrid with a larger electric motor than a mild hybrid.
The rated range of the 450e in electric mode is 48 miles. I get more like 57 miles in the summer. The gas range is 412 miles. The combined 460 miles is over 7 hours of hwy driving.
So what's the problem?
