Replacement Parts for Your Mercedes-Benz. Genuine Mercedes-Benz parts, exchange units and factory approved accessories are the recommended replacement parts for your Mercedes-Benz vehicle and are available through your authorized Mercedes-Benz Dealership. These parts meet the same exacting quality control standards as the original equipment on your vehicle and comply with all applicable Federal and State safety regulations. Mercedes-Benz does not warrant non-MercedesBenz parts, units and accessories and their use may affect warranty coverage for certain repairs relating to such parts, units and accessories

The direct answer to the OP's question is absolutely no, you do not need to use the MB dealer for maintenance. This is actually the law, they can't change your warranty for putting in non-MB oil/brake fluid/filters as long as the stuff meets the specifications for the car. I am not advocating going to jiffy lube or anything like that. Hell, MB parts for a B service only cost about $150-$200. Find a good indi, check what they use to make sure it complies with the specs before you have them do it, keep your receipts and you are good.

To the OP, find a good independent MB specialist. These specialists will always use MB parts, and no it is illegal for MB to not honor your warranty. My S560 has been serviced at the dealer up until 30,000 miles. Most recently I had my brakes replaced and for what the dealer wanted to charge me just for pads I got pads AND rotors done at an independent shop. MB OEM rotors and aftermarket ceramic pads at my request. The MB specialist is great, he and all his techs are huge MB and BMW fans, they all drive them (older ones) and we put the car up on the lift and geeked out for 45 minutes underneath it, it was great. Much better experience than the dealer and WAY cheaper. Plus, I feel confident I am getting better work. I have a similar Lexus guy from when I drove Lexuses.
Only nice thing about the dealer is the experience of going in there, its a nice upscale experience and the staff makes you feel special, and the loaners. But there's an enterprise right next to the independent mechanic and I can drive a Camry for a day for $45.
Don't let people tell you that you are being cheap. Wanting value does not make you cheap, it makes you smart.
One thing though, having a relationship with the dealer may help if you have issues down the line, but I haven't found its helped me. My dealers have seen fit to tell me my issues are normal just like they do everybody else lol.
