Why is active steering assist grey?

As others have noted, my understanding (and my car's behaviour) is that the "steering wheel" icon is grey when the system is READY but not active, but green only when cruise control is ON and the steering assist is ACTIVE.

It'll also go grey if the lane markers are not seen well.

Not necessarily. The system doesn't need lane markers if there are other cars it can follow, for example in stop&go traffic. It only goes grey if there are neither lane markers nor enough other cars nearby to figure out where the lane is.

Just headed out for gas… my lane departure/lane keep indicators are grey if the system is READY but cannot determine where the lane extents are (ie no lines) but are GREEN when the system can determine lines and is ACTIVE (gives departure help). For clarity, cruise control does NOT need to be engaged for lane keep assist to work.
