Why is active steering assist grey?

Even when I have mine on, the icon will grey out if it can't see lines.
It's interesting that, around 2005, the Feds started requiring outer lines on roads, in order for an entity to receive Fed highway funds or grants. It more than tripled the cost of striping, because they also required glass beads to be added.
They were envisioning these driver assists well before it was mainstream.
I think the rules had been in place since the 90s, but enforcement and funds withholding started in the oughts.

As for the HOLD function, make sure to keep the brake pedal at a somewhat constant pressure when coming to a stop, and after the car come to a complete stop, quickly push down on the brake pedal more. That should activate the hold function (verify it by the "HOLD" icon)

I found this active steering assist is only available (green) when I drive with advanced cruise control engaged. I swear I noticed it was green without cruise control engaged when I picked up this car three weeks ago.
And whatever how deep I pushed the brake padel, the auto hold cannot be activated.

As for the auto hold, a few people seem to have a tough time figuring out how it works. It doesn't work based on how deep you push the brake pedal. It's activated by a quick stab once you have come to a full stop. Come to a full stop, and easing off the brake pedal as one normal does for a smooth stop. Then once the car is fully stopped for a moment, give the brake pedal a stab. Don't push it slowly in. That doesn't work. Has to be a quick stab.

Hopefully OP's problem will require a much simpler fix.

Does the active STEERING assist keep one IN the lane or does the vehicle have to drift to the side of the lane? I ask, since most times I read that it "corrects" the path by applying brakes, etc. I have this feature in another non-Benz vehicle and it operates fairly seamlessly with keeping one in the middle of a lane. Benz makes it sound like it's a reactive feature: like one has to drift to the edge of the lane and then it brings one back.
Any comments are appreciated as we're thinking of ordering and don't know if we'll get much use from the Driver assistance package. (We'll get the dystonic CC for sure though.) I do understand the lane change feature, etc. It's just the lane keeping one that I'm confused with.
TIA

Lane keep assist, when enabled, is passive, and activate when you drift toward the edge of your lane. It will first warn you by vibrating the steering wheel (on "slow" drift), and apply brake on opposite side if continues.
The steering assist, requires the advanced cruise control, and when active, it will keep your car in the middle of the lane with steering input instead of brake.
