Is there a difference between mild hybrid drive and hybrid assist?

It may be a stupid question, but I’m debating between a 580 or an AMG 53 and trying to notice the engine difference. I know ones a V8 and one is a 6 cylinder but what’s up with one being a “hybrid assist” and one being “mild hybrid”? Are they the same?
EDIT: I’m looking at what. Recedes calls the regular GLE engines and what they call the AMG engines. Is it the same system on each?

Not exactly the answer you want, but do a search for GLE580 Car and Driver or AMG 53 Car and Driver, Might add the year also.

This is an informative article that may help answer your questions:

https://driving.ca/features/feature-...-hybrid-system

I believe that the term "mild hybrid" is a general term indicating that the vehicle can capture power (regeneration) and provide power (electric boost) from the battery. The designation of being a "mild" hybrid, I think, is that a mild hybrid cannot propel the vehicle solely on electric power. Whereas a traditional "full" hybrid -- think Prius -- can sometimes run on battery power alone, under certain circumstances, the Mercedes mild hybrid never can.

I think the term "hybrid assist" simply refers to the car's ability to instantly add electric power to the already-running gas engine's output, thereby "assisting" with the vehicle's propulsion.

Hope that helps

I believe they are one and the same -- both have a 48V system with an electric motor/generator between the engine and transmission. The electric motor in both has ~20 hp and primarily assists the engine when accelerating. The electric motor also starts the engine (no separate starter motor) and acts as a generator when slowing down (regenerative braking). This allows the engine to shut off while coasting or slowing down. It also allows both to creep forward on electric only power if you take your foot off the brake when stopped. But with only about 20 HP available, when you step on the gas it will quickly start the engine and then assist the engine while the turbo spins up to reduce lag.

Strong hybrids by comparison have larger electric motors (60-150 hp) and can accelerate the vehicle using only the electric motor and power stored in the battery from regenerative braking.

No idea about these specific vehicles, as I just bought my first and last MB, but in general "mild hybrid" means you can't run in electric-only mode (just an electric motor between motor and trans) whereas with a PHEV (which is more complicated) you can.

EDIT: On second thought, PHEV isn't so complicated either. Just think of it as an EV with a gas generator.
