"My neighbour recently drove over a rock in his Mercedes SL, ripped the sump open and the cost to repair was $55k" ~~ it's hard to comment without the actual quote. If what you're saying is correct, it's still 2-3 times (depending on a model) less than the cost of new SL vehicle, MB SL is not Hyundai and surface area of the sump is likely smaller than that of EV battery, so statistically saying, the damage you're describing is less likely.
you believe what to believe, in this case the dealer said it was damaged and the insurance company agreed. I can’t imagine why the insurance company would agree if it wasn’t? Either way, he gave it a hell of a thump and yes the Benz is a more expensive vehicle new than an Ionic 5 but the value of this one was comparable.

Tell that to my BMW 530. I hit a falling rock (not fallen) and it emptied my crankcase in 5 feet.
Oil light came on and I shut it down and towed it.

The size of the damage isn't related to the potential damage.

That MotorMouth channel has gotten pretty full of itself, and I quit watching a couple years ago.

Their only claim to fame now is a leggy photo of the wife.
