Dashcam "Device is too slow" Error

Hey, have been having this issue for a few months. Thought maybe it was the usb so got a faster one from best buy but still have the same issue. Works well some of the time but then get this error sometimes. I use a 3.1 speed sandisk flash drive. This is the one I use: https://www.bestbuy.com/site/sandisk...?skuId=6560692

Unfortunately, USB flash drive manufacturers rarely list write speed or sustained write speed and its read speed doesn't matter much. Mercedes recommends SSD based flash drives in the user manual to guarantee proper write speed. So, you have a few options here:

1. Buy an SD card reader from a reputable manufacturer, or get the usb-c one Apple one from an Apple store if you don't want to spend much time choosing. Then, buy an SD card that is V30 rated, V-rating refers to sustained writes and it's what you care about. You may get away with V10 but I think V30 cards have more quality options to choose from.
2. Buy a portable SSD if you're comfortable with the form factor.
3. Try to find a USB-C flash drive with higher sustained write speed, SSD based ones are bigger in size, regular ones are a hit or a miss and usually are not rated.

Theres an existing thread on this topic, someone recommended the USB-C Samsung ‎MUF-256DA/AM model. Originally I had purchased a different Sandisk one with greater write speed but this works fine. And its very compact sized.

I've used several, off-the-shelf, drives without paying attention to formatting. Never had an issue, even with a USB-C adapter.

ExFat. Is there a specific format it should be?

I've been using this Samsung USB C 256GB on my 2024 GLE63, hasn't given me any error messages with automatic loop recording. Drive was formatted on my Mac using master boot record and exFAT.

Good small form factor, I like.

I have been using SAMSUNG T7 Shield From Amazon. Rugged form factor here to prevent possible issues with potholes and accidents. Also boasting a pretty high read/write speeds. I don't know if it is high endurance to withstand continuous recording for prolonged use. But the title has the gamer keyword with good average reviews so I think it should probably be good enough for my use case.

This is the same one that I bought from Best Buy. It's been giving me issues for a month or so after working fine for about two months. Based on recommendations here and in the Best Buy Q&A, it looks like a Samsung Endurance or SanDisk®️ High Endurance/ MAX Endurance Memory Card is needed when using it for a dashcam.

I'm using a sandisk USB stick with a usb-c adapter. It gave me no issues for months. Then I started getting the "Device Too Slow" error pretty much every time I drove. I also got the notification that it was full and was going to overwrite older recordings. I thought perhaps the two messages were related. I deleted all the files off the drive and I haven't gotten the "device too slow" error since. I honestly think it was due to the drive being full in my case.

Try formatting your drive smaller. Mine only seems to get slow when a large volume gets full. Smaller volumes stay speedy. I suspect it's an issue with too much memory being used for disk caching.

Do you mean when you format, you choose say 200gb instead of 256gb? Does the allocation unit size matter?

This fault happened for the first time on a road trip last weekend. We were using a probably slower PNY USB flash drive with a USB-C 90degree connector.

I bought this to try:

This is the adapter I use in the center console. Its pretty compact, especially with the above Samsung Flash Drive.

As it was mentioned earlier in the thread, if you want something reliable, you should go with an SSD, as Mercedes recommends in the manual. Most usb flash drives are not meant to be written at this rate, leading to inconsistent performance and premature death of said drives.

My USB-c stick has been working for 10 months so far. It does tell me it’s full and will overwrite files. I expect that. If it fails, I will probably go with a SSD drive.

Since switching to a High Endurance card, I have had no issues in many months.
