I noticed that even when my battery is fully charged, if I accelerate hard the car will switch to gas for the extra power. It will then switch back to electric. I assume this is normal?

Yes, normal. There is a soft stop in the pedal in EL mode which lets you feel the end of the electric motor power range. Keep pushing past that and the gas engine will turn on.
