I guess the instant torque of the electric motor in the plugin version helps a lot though when accelerating just a moment, which is what usually happens in everyday traffic. That's what makes a 150 HP engine feel adequate.

I drove home 130 miles yesterday, starting in E mode. It switched to H mode about 60 miles into the trip. My overall fuel consumption rate was 56 mpg.
Normally I start in E mode. The ICE is off according to the tach and only comes on when hard accelerating or battery charge depleted and switch to H mode.
Today I started in H mode and the GLE behaved exactly the same. The ICE is off according to the tach and only comes on when hard accelerating or battery charge deplete.
I don't see any difference.
I then tried Battery Hold. Watching the energy consumption guage I could see some battery is being used and recharged.
I wish Mercedes would tell us the algorithmic model of each mode. I think our over simplified assumptions are wrong.
