Around the city I believe it would be the 325 pound-feet of torque of the elect motor that makes the vehicle seem livelier in the city

Exactly.
That's the reason I preferred the diesel on two MLs I owned. It moves a heavy car with more authority.

Yeah, my entry level diesel has a max of 550 Nm plus a mild hybrid system. It's surprisingly quick to get going.
I guess the instant torque of the electric motor in the plugin version helps a lot though when accelerating just a moment, which is what usually happens in everyday traffic. That's what makes a 150 HP engine feel adequate.

I drove home 130 miles yesterday, starting in E mode. It switched to H mode about 60 miles into the trip. My overall fuel consumption rate was 56 mpg.

Normally I start in E mode. The ICE is off according to the tach and only comes on when hard accelerating or battery charge depleted and switch to H mode.

Today I started in H mode and the GLE behaved exactly the same. The ICE is off according to the tach and only comes on when hard accelerating or battery charge deplete.

I don't see any difference.

I then tried Battery Hold. Watching the energy consumption guage I could see some battery is being used and recharged.

I wish Mercedes would tell us the algorithmic model of each mode. I think our over simplified assumptions are wrong.
