Hoping I can lean on this group for some guidance. I have a 2024 GLE 350 w/ 22" OEM summer wheels. I recently bought a second hand set of 20" OEM AMG 5-spoke wheels that were take-offs from a 2022 GLE 350/450.

Here's where I'm a little out my depth. This morning I had a brand new set to 20" winter tires installed on the 20" AMG wheels at my local tire shop. After driving for 5-10 minutes I was notified that no TPMS sensors were detected/programmed. I'm reasonably certain there were in fact TPMS sensors present on the take-offs that I purchased.

I called the tire shop after the fact, and they're telling me I will need to schedule a return visit in which they will have to remove the tires, and then replace the existing TPMS sensors with new ones. Is that the only option to have the car detect the TPMS correctly? I perhaps mistakenly thought that I wouldn't have to worry about TPMS considerations because they were coming straight off another GLE.

Is it possible for me to reprogram the TPMS on the winter wheels without needing to remove the wheels from the car and take off the tires? For example, would a TPMS programming tool from Amazon work?

There are different versions of sensors and you need the version compatible with your vehicle. If websites weren’t detected then what they said is likely correct.

if the rims did have correct sensors installed, I believe it’s just a matter of navigating to the TPMS display and the pressing ok (maybe followed by down arrow?) to have them bond to a new set of sensors

2024 and 2022 GLEs both use the same 433 MHz sensors, so that should not be an issue. And 2022 is new enough that the batteries should still be good. Try this:

Tire shops have handheld sensors that can detect them, if they are installed. Also, the sensors are dormant when new and have to be woken up. They ship like this to reduce battery usage while it's sitting on the shelves. Maybe they were never activated?

So what tires did you get? I just got a new set of Alpin 5 on 20" wheels. They are very quiet and drive well so far in the dry and wet. No snow yet. I kind of don't miss my 22" summer tires with the 2" og2 added sidewall comfort.

The 20s were used, so sensors were not new. I agree that the Michelin Alpin V SUV tires are great. I have mine on for the 5th season and they have been very good in all conditions, even dry.

I had a brand new set of Nokian Hakkapeliitta R5 SUV winters installed on the wheels. I bought the used 20's for the wheels only and had the shop swap the tires (and dump the old ones).

Unfortunately restarting the tire pressure as suggested by GregW doesn't solve/fix the issue. I continue to see this message on my dash:
