Rear camera constant moving noises on GLE450

Hard to accept that anyone would do something so hopelessly stupid on a production vehicle, but the rear camera makes series of clunking noises every time it moves in and out. It moves non stop all the time, based on the travel speed... Is there a way to do something about it? I wrote to MB but they have not offered any help. Is there any software update? I wish I paid attention when purchasing this vehicle, because knowing this I wouldn't have purchased it, as this drives me nuts knowing that I spent additional $1100 on the "quietness" options - read: something that every other upscale SUV comes standard with, anyways. This should be a sure recall. What kind of a moron you have to be to put something like that on a production vehicle that is aspiring to be luxurious, quiet and smooth?

Yeah it’s annoying. From what I read you can drive slow to calibrate it but it only lasts for that ignition cycle then reverts back.

I’m pretty sure Mercedes deems it normal. Others have had success convincing their dealers to insulate the area with limited success.

This has been discussed a lot. Recalls are for safety issues. Apparently MB doesn’t think it’s an issue. Maybe MB will issue software to keep the camera out all the time. Personally I think the complaining is over the top. MB has been hiding the rear camera for years. I don’t hear the camera on my convertible.

As others mentioned, it is a common issue for 2024+ model year vehicles (or 2023+), it is a change in MB's way of calibrating cameras so it pops up much more frequently than previous model year vehicles, no fix and dealerships are claiming it is working normally by design: https://mbworld.org/forums/gle-class...very-stop.html

I know a guy who is a foreman at a MB service center in the midwest and he said they get complaints about it all the time but that's the way it was "designed". He even jokingly said "just because they designed it like that, doesn't mean it was a good design".

Thing is the calibration prior to this change was working properly, the rear cam pops out when PARKTRONIC calls for it and displays an image, the image is calibrated correctly, I really don't see how it needs to pop out every stop on the facelift GLE, and newer MB models to calibrate, it doesn't even display an image during that time, it just pops out for the sake of popping out.

I don’t believe it is designed to do this as my 2024 GLE does not exhibit this behavior. My camera comes out when I back out of my garage and has gone back in by the time I get 150’ down the road to my first stop sign. It doesn’t come out again until I get in a parking situation where the sensors see an obstacle or I put the car in reverse. Have you tried adjusting the sensitivity settings on the parking sensors? By any chance do you have a license plate frame that could be in view of the rear camera?

Good question, I do not have a facelift GLE, that said, the main complaints I heard from the other thread is on the facelift GLE, and other MB models like the facelift A-Class, GLA, etc.

I want to clarify however, I do have the opportunity to drive a GLE facelift and noticed this sound, maybe I have sensitive ears.

This happens on my wifes 2024 ALL THE TIME. I wonder for folks who have to drive within the calibration parameters leaving their house its not an issue?

The only good news is that my wife is oblivious to the sound whereas I hear it. I brought it up once and she had no idea what I was talking about. Now when I happens I look over to see if she notices. So far so good, she loves this beast.

Since a forum member with a 2024 say they don't have this issue, I wonder if it depends on the software version installed.

It is a safety alert, to alert the passenger the vehicle is coming to a stop so be prepared to get off. /s

So you tell them it’s the rear camera. No big deal.

I have a similar issue with my GLC300 Coupé. I've found a method of mitigation… turn up the radio/music player volume. Yeah, I know it's the cheap & cheerful response that the CarTalk guys used to give on their old NPR radio show but, in all honesty (i.e. not sarcasm), it does mitigate the clunky sound. Find a good playlist and turn it up until it drowns out the unwanted sound.
