Engine Oil Temperature gage

My Sevice Dashboard display depicts an analog engine oil temperature gage. With an range of 70 to 285 degrees there are 2 unidentified scale graduation markings; one in blue and another in red. Does anyone know what actual temperatures are indicatied at those markings?

Blue means cold (under operating temperature), Red means hot (overheating) or I might be mistaken, do you mind posting a picture.

Pretty much as said above. Between the blue and the red marker is the normal operating temperature range. If the temperature is below the blue marker, then the engine isn't fully warmed up yet, and if it's above the red marker, then the engine is overheating. Pretty simple really and would have thought that was obvious.

As a newbie I'll be courteous and thank you for the replys. My original question was "Does anyone know what actual temperatures are indicatied at those markings?"

It doesn't look like it.
However, there is probably another display that shows the actual oil temperature in degrees Fahrenheit or Centigrade, depending upon your selection of units.
You would have to watch that display and note at what temperature the colors change.
Hopefully you don't see red!
That display may only be available in AMG cars, though.

My sincere apologies, I didn't realized you asked for the actual temperature amounts. Sorry about that!

Sorry, with the previous answers I didn't realize you were looking for the actual temps. However, I'm not sure what it matters since you don't have a precise readout of the temperature anyway. The blue marking should be 140F(60C), that's when the engine is considered at operating temperature. I'll double check today, but that's when the oil temperature goes from blue to white in my AMG. I have an actual digital readout of the precise temperature and it's displayed in blue while cold, then goes white and it would go red if it overheated, but never had it there. Not sure where the upper temperature is exactly, but you can extrapolate it and google will tell you that engine oil above 250F is considered too hot, so that gives you an idea. The mid-point of your gauge is 177.5F, (70 + 285) / 2.

Sorry about that forum member superswiss, that was my fault.

In regards to the operating temperature I heard the GLE 450 was 71c (159? 160F), do you mind confirming that via the operator's manual?

Now that you mention it, yes 160F is correct I believe, not 140F. My previous Audi started to show oil temperature at 140F. I confused that in my head, but if I remember correctly, the oil temperature indicator doesn't go white until it hits 160F. The transmission is good to go at 120F in case somebody is curious.

Do you know why MB set it to 71 and deemed that as the safe temperature to start going to higher RPMs?

Well, there are more knowledgeable people than me spending their time with oil formulations and the detailed thermal properties. Ultimately it's a function of the oil. It's also why you don't wanna run an oil that doesn't meet the manufacturer's specs. AMG/MB has determined that at 160F the oil viscosity of their spec is sufficient to consider it warmed up and ready for higher loads, but even so you may wanna wait a bit longer. Typical oil operating temperature range is generally between 190F and 240F, that's when everything is properly warmed up. I don't start hammering my AMG until the oil is in that range and the transmission has reached operating temperature, even though at 160F the engine oil is technically at operating temperature.

Oil, yes, but all the metal parts are up to temperature, and tolerances are "as designed." Prior to full warmup, tolerances are not optimized.

That's another benefit of electric water pumps - they allow the engine to reach operating temperature more quickly, reducing wear (and emissions).
Those are also the temperatures that the oil is at its best, as well, although warm-up is also part of that equation.

Tranny temps take a lot longer to "go white" than engine oil.

Ah yes. Viscosity makes a lot of sense, thank you for that!

I always hated how long it takes for the tranny fluid to reach 50c as well, especially in the winter when it is -15c here, it takes like an hour, can't really enjoy the car as my commute is less than that sometimes. Obviously don't like the idea of driving spiritedly when the transmission temperature is in the blue range.

Folks recommended driving vehicle in sport and not sport+ when it reaches like 35C to further heat up the tranny faster. I am not sure if that is a good idea and should just only start driving spiritedly when it reaches the operating temperature of 50c. Any thoughts on that?

If you open the "Performance menu", you will get the following display, detailing "actual" Oil Temp....

I think this could be enabled by programming some variant coding.
Do you know what the design is? On a non-AMG, i know there is "sport", "progressive", etc

I will check next time I am in vehicle. Now that I read what @mikapen posted Re AMG, I do recall having @rjautomotive add AMG displays when they coded ILS+. I think the displays look much nicer. I will check which theme is being displayed and report back to you.

It is accessible from the "Info" menu in MBUX, and available under any design.Ibelieve is called "Performance" in AMG.

I guess it is better than nothing, would be ideal if it is shown in the IC plus in actual numbers. Guess you need an amg for that.
