Rear Shock Failure
Rear Shock Failure
Hello,
My right rear shock is suddenly clunking over bumps and has about driven me half mad. I've seen a collection of threads here on "rattles in the rear of the vehicle" and it has me wondering how common of a problem this is.
Have your rear shocks failed, and at how many miles / kms? For those of us outside the initial warranty period (I'm at 73k miles but within CPO warranty) was the failure covered?
Thank you!

Equipment that I believe all Mercedes shops are required to have.
I removed it from the vehicle and then removed the mount from the shock. It clunks when you rapidly compress and release the piston. It's definitely internal to the shock.
I also drove up my stone driveway with the shock removed and the suspension was silent whereas it previously clunked rapidly driving on the stone.
The vehicle otherwise rode and drove fine, and the shock seems to have about the expected amount of resistance. There is no evidence of oil leakage.

I don't remember seeing a post about an internal clanking failure.
Just got back from having BOTH rear shocks replaced due to clunking. 2020 GLE 450 with normal spring suspension at 56,000 miles. Luckily we bought the 7yr/100,000mi warranty extension. No charge.
Didn't notice a degradation in ride, just the noise.

Standard lowered suspension (code 491) here. My rear shock also failed at 32k miles, other one failed at 34k miles. Both replaced under warranty. All four corners still work fine at 73k miles, I think it is becoming a bit floaty to my taste, there is no way all four shocks will last to 100k miles mark. This time I would look for aftermarket options if available. My W164 is very happy with B6 Bilstein shocks, no B6s available for V167.
