Load Sill Protector Issue

Hello, I just picked up my 2025 GLE53. I ordered with the VPC installed load sill protector and it looks like the adhesive is already failing in the center. There’s a gap in the center and the piece is coming up.

Love the car, but annoyed I’m going to have to go back to the dealer for a fix.

Anyone have a similar issue?

Thanks!

I've had the same part on three cars, never an issue. It sounds like it wasn't installed correctly.

Thanks for your reply — a friend of mine has one on his GLE450 and doesn’t have an issue. Frustrating to have to go back to the dealer for this. They mentioned the body shop would use stronger glue to stick it back on rather than a replacement.

That's up to you but if it were me, I'd make the dealer replace it. You paid for a new part on a new car, and this isn't an item that normally has a problem.

Thanks for your advice — I agree and I’m going to talk to the dealer about this. They’re usually surprisingly helpful.

I'm confident they will repair or replace that part. To me the danger is that the strip will be bent / creased at removal, so they may need extra time.

But I'd hate to make a trip to the dealer just for that issue. If it looks insecure, or like things will snag on it, maybe some Gaffer's Tape would be an inconspicuous temporary fix. It's a tape specifically designed to hold well but leave no residue. I have a black interior so it'd be virtually invisible.

Thanks — my sales associate has arranged for a replacement to be ordered. I was concerned that it was warped before installation and someone just forced it on.

I’ll look into the tape because it definitely sticks up — there’s a decent gap. This is the load sill protector on the trunk/exterior of the vehicle.

Has anyone either removed or installed one of these?

While I’m waiting for a replacement, I’m considering removing this one. Dirt/water etc is getting underneath it and my towels get stuck on the edges. With the heat/humidity we are having on the East coast, I assume I can run some fishing line under it and then use Goo Gone or a 3M auto adhesive remover to get it clean. The adhesive has to be the same as the badging adhesive.

I haven't personally, but I did have it done to my car. When I bought my 2020 GLE in 2019, I took it to a detailer to have it clear wrapped and ceramic coated. When I picked it up, the installer said he (gently and slowly) removed the load sill protector so he could apply a single sheet of wrap along the entire bumper area without any seams. He then taped the load sill protector back on. Zero issues since then including in very harsh winters north of the border.

If it's any consolation, this is among the more minor issues you can have, since it's essentially a superficial issue with an easy fix and a ~$100 part (you can also find knockoffs on Amazon in different colors). It's not even a factory mistake, as you said the load sill protector is installed separately after the car leaves the factory, at the vehicle prep center, and it really is just double sided tape.

Edit to add: I feel like forum member Greg installed his himself after receiving his car, if memory serves. Probably somewhere in the old accessories thread from 2019.

Thanks for this! I might try and remove mine until the dealership can get around to installing a new one.
