Is The Rear Heat A/C Climate Control Unit Install Possible?

Hi,

I have a question if if is possible to retrofit the Rear Heat A/C Climate Control the the GLE's that do not have them.

I thought I did not need this when I ordered my GLE but now I feel like I am missing out.

Mainly are the wiring harness's already there just missing the panel itself without the 4 Zone Package, and it would be a plug and play on the back of the arm reset? Or is it more involved, meaning needing coding, and a entire harness to be wired up to the head unit up front?

I can’t imagine what’s involved. I also would like to know what you think you are missing out on. I have it. We rarely have people in the back seat. Don’t know if I would have ordered it. I would imagine it would cost considerably more than factory installation.

I have it. Rarely have people in the back seat. When there are people in the back seat, I've never seen them use the controls. I don't think you are missing out on anything.

We have our 70 pound lab retriever in the back seat and find the reat HVAC controls very useful. You can control from MBUX.

Can't you just control the airflow volume and direction with the manual controls back there?

It used to be that Thermotronic and Thermatic were separate systems in the W166 chassis. I’m not certain Mercedes maintained that for V167. If that is still true, then you'd need to replace the actual unit behind the dashboard (not sure about evaporator core though) because it has additional blend doors in the main unit to separately control the temperature across four zones. That would also require a coding change because the control software should be different for two vs four zones. I’m also not sure where the temperature sensors are located for the rear zones (might actually be in the control unit in the center console?)

I just had my evaporator core replaced (AC stopped working) and just that replacement required them to teach-in the blend door actuation again for my system which is 4-zone - so it’s likely these two systems are technically different behind the dashboard.

One issue I can think of is that the models that have rear climate control is that there are 2 extra vents on each of the front pillars of the rear seat. Models with just the 2 way CC do not have these vents. (My 2024 350 did not have them and did not have rear climate controls, but my 2024 450 with rear controls does). So it might produce some kind of software error if it goes to enable those vents and they aren't there.

That could be a 350 vs 450 thing. I don’t know.
