GLE Mercedes Emblem Got Keyed - OK to buff/repair?

Someone came along and decided to key the Mercedes emblem/logo on the front of my 2024 GLE. My understanding is that there are sensors either in or behind the massive grill emblem logo.
  • Am I ok to have my local dent/paint shop buff or otherwise fix the scratches in the logo? Is there any risk this will damage the sensors in/behind the logo? Or is this not a concern whatsoever?
Scratches are difficult to make out in this photo, but he’s a pic (albeit dark) for reference.

Thanks in advance for the help.

You may want to have the dealer replace it if it bugs you (it would bug me hugely). You may want to talk to your insurance company. Vandalism may be covered under Comprehensive, which usually has a lower deductible.

I think a headlight restoration type kit like 3M will work fine on this and not ruin the sensors at all.

the scratches will need to be sanded out and then the whole sensor polished

The Distronic is a very sensitive system. In my case (dirty sensors error), I had to replace the distronic base plate star (A0008880500) completely, even though there were no visible scratches or any signs of physical damage.

Yep, not sure polishing will work. I’d still file an insurance claim.

I see some scratches in the chrome star, are there some in the black background as well? The chrome star can't be buffed or repaired but there aren't any sensors behind it either.
