Proximity Sensors

I have a new GLE350 with PARKTRONIC. When I come close to an obstacle when backing, or moving forward, I do not hear any audible warning, nor see any visual display alert. Perhaps the system is set to off? But I am having trouble finding the settings to turn it on.

PS> I am NOT talking about anything relating to the system which will park the car automatically for you.

I'm not aware that you can turn these off or on. Do you have the small dark glass bubble on the center of the dash and in the back up on the roof near the hatch? These light up and only "sound" when you get close and the lights turn from yellow to red.

A gaggle of MB's
Please see your Owner's Manual - starting pg#212 or so.

Please note the silver "P" button on center dash console - by heated seat buttons - needs to show "no light" - if that P button shows red the Parktronic has been switched off.

The manual pages give you a good overview of what Parktronic does and does not do - it's a "intimate range" system meaning it starts detecting around 24020 inches.

Keep the beat !

I learned two things. First, I really need to read the manual and how two stop the damn beeping when I'm carrying my bikes.

it's hard to discern from the manual, but you have to get really close before it beeps (at least on mine). try pulling up to a bush or something real soft and you should see it happen. manual talks about 6th or 7th segment (lights) before it beeps. i was testing all over the drive a few days ago then gave up. went to a restaurant, parked head in in a space with bushes and it went crazy. red lights and beeping. had just about six inches to the actual bush. good luck, ron

Thanks for the responses. I did figure it out. The "bubble" on top of the dash works fine, although in bright sun it was hard to see. Further, one has to be very close to an object before it alerts the driver. Unfortunately, despite being a somewhat educated adult, I find the owners manual often difficult to inform. Alas, I shall endeavor to persevere!

Question about your sensors: I didn't opt for Parktronic - and I now mostly regret that simply because I thought the parking sensors were standard and Parktronic was just the automated parking thing.. Anyhow, can you see the sensors in your bumper? I'm asking because I want to just install a sensor system aftermarket but wonder if the factory set up is somehow able to avoid the little dots on the bumper look, or if they're there.. Thanks

my sensors are all visible, same as any of my other vehicles with sensors. dumb question though, are you saying that there are two sets of bumpers? one with sensors and one without? i haven't looked, but i would have thought it is one bumper with either a sensor or a blank. ron
