Different OEM tires
Hey guys,
Just wondering do you guys know why the ML/GLE have two different tires for the 19 inch rims. My GLE has the Dunlop, and my cousins ML comes with Continental. Any significant difference aside from the price? I know the Continentals cost about 100 more per tire vs. the Dunlop. What are your thoughts on this?

I think it's more of what supplier gave MB the best deal and what they have in stock when the vehicle goes across the production line. My GLE400 has one kind of tires while a friends GLE400 that was purchased at a different dealer, but very close, and only about a month apart has a different kind of tire.

it would be interesting to know geographic locations of dealers where the vehicles were delivered off the line. meaning, does mb go so far as to match tires to geographic regions? it's a stretch, but way easier than making Command user friendly. ron

I don't know about that, but at my dealer the 21" wheels come with Continental all-season tires and the 22" wheels come with Pirelli summer tires. It makes no sense at all to decide which will be needed based on "wheel size". Fortunately, for me the wheels I wanted came with the tires I wanted.

Nail in tire
I have a nail in my right front tire and will need to replace it - my car has 22" Pirelli tires but the dealer only has Continental's in stock. Is it ok to mix?

Good luck.

The Continentals are all-season tires. The Pirellis are summer-only tires. Never mix those!

Thanks guys - the nail is right on the edge of the repair area - will find out if it can be fixed. If not a new tire is necessary- btw, the continental tires are summer tires and Mercedes recommends them. Not sure if mixing manufacturers is ok but the dealer will confirm. Thanks all

even if the manufacture reserve the right to use different OE tires. But from a stand point of a consumer, wouldn't we have different experience and value with the same vehicle? i.e continental is around 250 a piece and dunlop one is around 150 a piece. As a buyer the dunlop is less valuable compare to the Continental (i.e. getting your money worth). Also there might be slight difference in handling, ride, and wear (i am not 100% sure on those metrics). Also base on the tread wear rating, Dunlop is rated for 200 and the Continental is rated for 480. I just want to start a discussion regarding and see what you guys think of it.

If those are 22" Continental summer tires, they're different than the ones that normally come on the vehicle. Standard are the 21" all-season Continentals or 22' summer Pirellis.

I have the 19 all season Continentals on mine. First time I've ever had Conti tires on a vehicle. So far, so good. I'll be interested to see how they wear as I go along.
As far as the original thread intent, I would have thought that geography, as well as other factors, would have played a part in the tire choice, but that doesn't seem to be the case.
As I recall, all the GLE's that I looked at had the Conti tires on them and that includes vehicles located in different states and regions of the country. I don't recall seeing Dunlop on them.

CDA- I just had a nail in my tire. 2016 GLE 350...
The nail was in the part that mercedes wouldn't fix. Or al least that is what they said...
I have had MANY repairs over the decades and this was not near the sidewall. I went to discount tire- did you know that they repair flats for FREE! They looked and said that if it is too near the sidewall , they can't repair it. Long story short, they pulled the tire off, repaired from the inside, put it back, balanced it and it didn't cost me a penny.
I know who I am buying my next set of tires from- I believe their marketing strategy worked.
Go see discount tire! if there is one near you.

i just did a quick tire rack lookup. there were only 2 dunlops listed. the prices of the dunlops were, i consider, within striking distance of the conti's. there were higher priced conti's that were runflats.
did op buy new? if demo or preown, dealer may have put new rubber on it before sale.
while mfg's do use various suppliers, conti has been an mb staple for a long time. i can't remember exactly, but pretty sure all prior mb's i bought had conti's off the lot.
as far as fixing flats, i got into it a little when i wound up buying 4 brand new tires 2 weeks apart (rear set then front). they would "plug" a tire off the tread, but would not guarantee it would hold because of the movement of radial tires. absolutely would not "patch" past the tread as the patch would move. looked it up some, everything seemed to align.

Spot on! Discount tire is the best and very fair on pricing.

I actually saw a good mix of both Conti and Dunlop in the area between all the ml/gle. So it is not an regional preference. I ordered the vehicle new last year in January, delivered in march.

Unfortunately the nail was not in an area that could be repaired so I had to get a new one. The dealer did have Pirelli's in stock so no issue. I have used Discount Tire in the past but unfortunately the locations in my area did not have my tire in stock.
