GLE 43 SUV (W166)
OEM windshield

Hi, I have a 2017 GLE SUV, I scheduled an appointment for windshield replacement and asked for an OEM glass. I want to do some study to make sure the glass is from factory, but I found very little information on the internet.

My windshield came with the car is labeled as "DOT 904 AS1 M413", I found it was manufactured at Pittsburgh Glass Work, I'd like to ask if anyone know whether Mercedes had used another brand for windshield?

A third party windshield shop. The local dealers doesn’t do windshield replacement unfortunately.

ilovebarce, I just posted my experience in having OEM glass replaced by a third party shop, look for the post in this section.

fabbrisd1, my local dealer says they "don't do glass". They outsource it to local shops. My local dealer also "doesn't do body work".

chassis, thanks for responding! I read your post about OEM replacement. I basically had the same pain process asking for an OEM when I saw the crack. It seems over painful to me so I decided to go with the after market glass 6 month ago.
Few weeks ago I found water leaks into the car, I personally think it is most likely due to workmanship rather than the glass itself. Unfortunately the leaking only happen in power wash or highway driving, the shop done the replacement cannot reproduce the leak onsite, so I decide to pay $$$$ to have a OEM installed and hope it will fix the leaking.

Good luck ilovebarce, please post your results. Agree that leaks are unlikely caused by the glass itself.

When you had your windshield replaced - did they have it back to you same day ? Windshield for GLE needs to set/cure for 24hrs

thank you - this is very important. My wife called one MB dealership and they told her , windshield replacement done the same day. My wife then called our MB dealer and they told her it takes 2 days- one day to install the glass and one day to let the glass cure and seal tested. So yes definitely don’t want some body doing a quick and dirty job with subpar quality glass that could leak or be noisy due to not sealed properly. My wife doesn’t like cutting corners and doesn’t mind paying our MB dealer to do it and do it right. After all she should now. She is an MD and cutting corners could jeopardize her patients’ health. .
