When I fuel my 2016 GLE I normally drape the gas cap retainer over the open filler door. Yesterday I noticed that there is a little sculpted area at the bottom of the door that looked like it might retain the gas cap. I put the cap in there and after a couple of tries, it seemed to stay. But when I put the nozzle in the filler tube the cap fell out and banged against the rear quarter.
After I got back home I messed around with it some more but could not get the cap to be really secure in the feature.
Does anyone know if/how that's supposed to work?
Amusing that I've owned this thing for 6 years and I'm still finding new to me features on it.

I use the Mickey Mouse engineered feature. It’s half-arsed. But it works if you are patient and get the hang of it.
Don't know if the GLE has a different design, although from your description it sounds the same. Every loaner I've had so far had the same one as my C63. The cap just slots in there and stays. Never had an issue with it falling out. As said above, most cars have something like this, so I just use it w/o thinking about it. Most of them are pretty much intuitive. Some have notches on the cap to hang it off the open fuel door. Those can be a bit flimsy, especially with small fuel doors. Just make sure you don't have any tension in the rubber leash. If you left it dangling before, then it's probably all twisted up now.

AHA! I get it now. I was trying to get the part that threads into the filler neck to engage the retaining features but it's actually the cap that goes into the retainer. Thank you!

This thread is great. BTW while we're on the subject of the gas cap, definitely make sure it clicks 3 times when tightening, unless you like check engine lights that don't disappear (for 100 miles?).

And if the check engine light comes on even after clicking 3 times, you may simply need a new gas cap. I had the fuel system checked and all that, and turned out the gas cap was simply old, even though it still clicked
Thank you so much! It works if you hook the cap coming in from the left to right. My car is am AMG GlLE 43 and I just couldn't fathom that MB would design it so that the cap hangs down against the paint. This forum is so helpful. Two MB dealerships didn't know the answer to this question.

Guess it is fair to say most modern cars have a holder of some sort? not just MBs?
